DETROIT, Mich. — Detroit broke a 51-year-old temperature record Tuesday, Oct. 13, when the high reached 88 degrees, and the summer-like stretch is now giving way to cooler fall weather.

Temperature gauges at Coleman A. Young Airport showed Detroit maxed out at 88 degrees. The record high for Oct. 13 had been 83 degrees, set in 1975. The National Weather Service had said early Tuesday that clear skies, south-southwest winds and a sagging cold front could push temperatures into the mid-80s.

A chance of rain and thunderstorms is in the forecast Wednesday morning after temperatures fall into the 50s overnight. Wednesday highs will top out in the high 60s, followed by the low 60s on Thursday, with conditions continuing to cool through the weekend.

Forecasters say the week will end with much cooler, fall-like conditions and the potential for rain through the weekend. Several Michigan cities set records early this week.

Farther north, a National Weather Service meteorologist said snowflakes could mix in Friday, Oct. 16, in the higher terrain of Marquette and Baraga counties in the Upper Peninsula as a strong low-pressure system moves through the Great Lakes.
