DETROIT, Mich. — Classes at the University of Detroit Mercy resume Wednesday, Oct. 14, after suspicious packages found on the McNichols campus Tuesday evening were determined to be non-threatening.

An employee reported two packages outside the Student Union at about 5:20 p.m. on Oct. 13, school officials said. The University Public Safety Department and Detroit police investigated the packages.

The university evacuated North Quad and Holden Hall, residence halls on the south end of campus, and canceled classes for the rest of the day. Students in other residence halls were told to remain in their rooms.

As of 8:30 p.m., the Detroit Police Department and the university Department of Public Safety had concluded their investigation and determined it was safe for students to return to their dorms. Officials said all buildings are now clear and available.

The campus sits along Livernois and McNichols on the city’s northwest side. The school has six residence halls housing about 800 students, and the university sent updates through its RAVE Emergency Alert System.
