DETROIT, Mich. — A Detroit volunteer high school football coach now faces a long felony docket after a Monday shooting that wounded a 33-year-old woman and her 7-year-old daughter on the east side.

Aaron Wright, 32, appeared at a Thursday arraignment on a 17-count filing from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. The counts include assault with intent to murder, home invasion, assault meant to cause great bodily harm, and discharging a firearm in a building so that someone was hurt. Bond was set at $250,000 cash or surety, with electronic monitoring and a late-night curfew.

Detroit Police Department officers said the dispute grew out of a fight among young children earlier that day. Wright went to the woman’s home, argued on the porch, forced his way inside as she tried to close the door, and fired a handgun. The mother was hit in the arm and the child was hit in the chest, the department said.

Both were taken for hospital care. Wright fled, then turned himself in; Detroit police booked him on Oct. 13. The school system that had used him as an unpaid assistant coach has cut ties with him.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is leading the prosecution. He returns for a bond review on Oct. 19 and a probable cause conference on Oct. 28.
