DETROIT, Mich. — Detroit Lions defensive end D.J. Wonnum will be giving back part of a paycheck after the NFL ruled that one of his two sacks against Arizona crossed the line.

The league on Saturday fined the pass rusher $12,611 for unnecessary roughness, tied to a hip-drop tackle on quarterback Jacoby Brissett with 3:54 to go in the second quarter of the 45-21 Week 5 rout of the Cardinals. No flag was thrown on the field.

It is his first fine since 2023, when he played in Minnesota. More important, it counts as strike one under this season’s rule covering five major fouls. Two more in that group would cost him a one-game suspension, while a player who stays at one violation gets half of the money returned after the season.

Wonnum is the second Lion in two weeks hit for the same tackle. Linebacker Jack Campbell was docked $15,930 for a hip-drop against Carolina. The team’s fines this season now add up to $190,015.

The Lions sit at 3-2 and are off this week for their bye.
