DETROIT, Mich. — A woman was carried out of a burning apartment on Plymouth Road on the city’s west side early Wednesday, and she remained in critical condition afterward, the Detroit Fire Department said.

The alarm came in at 12:34 a.m. Crews found flames coming from two sides of the unit, forced their way in and got the resident out with help from Detroit Police officers, according to the fire department.

The woman, who is in her mid-30s, was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital, the department said.

Firefighters had to break down a door to reach her, then handed her to police officers who moved her to the courtyard for medics while crews searched the building for anyone else inside.

The blaze was knocked down quickly and kept to a single unit. Several residents were evacuated from the complex during the response and were later allowed back in, fire officials said. Police officers who helped with the rescue were checked for smoke exposure.
