WAYNE, Mich. — An Amtrak passenger train slammed into a truck Thursday morning at the rail crossing on Merriman Road just south of Michigan Avenue in Wayne, and the Wayne Police Department is investigating what led to the crash.

Officers were sent to the tracks at about 8:30 a.m. Emergency crews took the truck driver to a hospital, where he was reported in stable condition.

Police said neither alcohol nor drugs appears to have played a part in the collision.

Merriman Road was shut in both directions at the tracks for a time and has since reopened. Avon Street stayed closed between Merriman and Niagara Street while crews hauled away debris.

The Wayne crash was the second train collision in the area this week. A day earlier, shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday, another passenger train struck a vehicle outside Ann Arbor.

Investigators want to hear from anyone who saw the crash. The Wayne police tip line is (734) 721-1414, ext. 2.
