ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Top-ranked Michigan needed every last tick on Friday night. Will Horcoff buried a shot with just 0.1 seconds left in regulation, lifting the Wolverines to a 3-2 comeback win over fifth-ranked Western Michigan at Yost Ice Arena.

The Broncos controlled the scoreboard for most of the night. After a scoreless first period, captain Zaccharya Wisdom put Western Michigan ahead at 8:36 of the second, cashing a rebound on a rush that started when Cole Spicer fed him the puck.

Michigan flipped the game in a hurry once the third period began. Jayden Perron tied it 44 seconds in with a backhand to the top of the net, and Dakoda Rheaume-Mullen made it 2-1 at 1:05. Perron, the nation’s scoring leader, now has 10 goals in seven games, the fastest any modern-era Wolverine has reached double digits, according to the program.

Western Michigan answered while killing a penalty. Spicer broke up a pass in his own zone and sent William Whitelaw away on a breakaway, and the shorthanded goal tied it 2-2 at 8:45.

With overtime looming, Horcoff gathered a loose puck above the right circle after a Cole McKinney attempt deflected off a defender and fired it home. The Broncos challenged for offside, but the goal stood after video review. Sophomore defenseman Drew Schock had two assists, and Quentin Miller stopped 25 shots for Western Michigan.

Michigan improved to 7-0-0 and is the first team in program history to open 7-0 in back-to-back years. Western Michigan fell to 4-1-0. The Wolverines start Big Ten play at Ohio State on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The two programs will see each other again in January, outdoors at Kalamazoo’s Waldo Stadium.
