DETROIT, Mich. — Malik Beasley, who last played in the NBA for the Detroit Pistons, is working out a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in the gambling case that has kept him off the court, his lawyer said Saturday.

Attorney Steve Haney said talks with the Department of Justice were under way and that a decision is likely early next week. Beasley, 29, had pleaded not guilty this summer in federal court in New York.

Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York say Beasley shaded his statistics in at least four games as a Milwaukee Buck in 2024 so that bettors could profit. The counts include bribery in sporting contests, wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy. In return, the indictment says, bettors paid him and debts he owed to former NBA player Ed Davis were cut or wiped out. Davis has also pleaded not guilty.

Beasley signed a one-year, $6 million deal with Detroit for the 2024-25 season and averaged 16 points a game, scoring 20 in his final appearance, a postseason defeat against the Knicks. Over nine seasons with six teams he earned close to $60 million.
