DETROIT, Mich. — Two days before Michigan votes on its open U.S. Senate seat, Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens stood beside Republican nominee Mike Rogers at a Detroit church on Sunday and said she would vote for him over Democrat Abdul El-Sayed.

The pair attended a service at Perfecting Church on Nevada Avenue on the east side, then spoke with reporters outside. Stevens, who lost the August Democratic primary to El-Sayed, said she reached the decision that morning and still considers herself a Democrat.

She said the El-Sayed campaign had made clear she was not welcome. A day earlier, she had been asked not to join him at events before Election Day. Rogers said he was honored to earn her vote.

Fallout came fast. Her chief of staff, Justin German, resigned after the press conference. El-Sayed, an Ann Arbor Democrat who formerly worked in public health, called the move a distraction and turned to health care, public schools and infrastructure.

Later Sunday, LaShawn English, director of UAW Region 1, said Stevens owes working people an apology. Polls open Tuesday, Nov. 3.
