DETROIT, Mich. — Downtown Detroit has its holiday centerpiece. Crews hoisted a 70-foot Norway spruce into place at Campus Martius Park on Wednesday, Nov. 4, during a ceremony put on by the Downtown Detroit Partnership.

The tree made a 226-mile trip from Mesick, a small town in northern Michigan. A local family planted it on their land about five decades ago, and the widow who owns the property donated it to the city to honor her late husband.

Over the coming weeks the spruce will be dressed in ornaments and 25,000 LED lights. Families lined the streets to see it roll in, with drummers adding to the scene, a sign of how the arrival has grown into its own event.

Lighting night, the 23rd in the city’s tradition, arrives on Friday, Nov. 20, beginning at 4 p.m., and admission costs nothing. The park will glow with more than 1 million lights, and the night will feature live entertainment, Olympic figure skaters and food trucks.

The DTE Foundation presents the lighting, and the Downtown Detroit Partnership produces it.
