Mt. Clemens, Michigan – James A. Smith, a respected attorney and family patriarch, passed away at the age of 83 on September 18, 2025. A distinguished figure in the legal community, Smith was recognized for his exceptional litigation skills and dedication to mentorship throughout his distinguished career.
Born on May 12, 1942, in Jackson, Michigan, Smith was the eldest child of Mary and John “Bill” Smith. He grew up on Washington Street surrounded by his four siblings and grandmother. After completing his education at St. Mary’s Catholic School, he graduated in 1960 and continued his studies at the University of Michigan. During his time at U of M, Smith developed his public speaking abilities as the announcer for the Michigan Marching Band, where he also met his future wife, Lucia Santini Smith.
Smith married Lucia in 1965 while attending law school at the University of Michigan. After graduating, he began his legal career at Bodman, Longley and Dahling in Detroit, where he eventually became a partner. His impressive career was characterized by a combination of intellectual rigor and compassion, making him a sought-after litigator and a valued mentor for younger associates.
Smith is remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his commitment to family. He and Lucia raised three children—Matt (Kimberly), Aaron (Amy), and Rachel (Chris) Busby—while residing in Grosse Pointe Park. Known affectionately as “Papa” to his eleven grandchildren, he embraced family traditions, creating lasting memories at their family cottage on Burt Lake and enjoying summers spent together. Smith’s love for travel also led him and his wife to Stratford, Ontario each year to attend musicals and plays with friends.
Aside from legal practice and family, Smith had a profound appreciation for Michigan’s natural beauty. He relished time on the lakes, engaging in activities such as sailing and boating, and was particularly fond of watching sunsets. His culinary interests included a fondness for homemade Italian dishes prepared by Lucia, and he had a soft spot for butter pecan ice cream, often treating his grandchildren to their favorite flavors.
Smith was a remarkable individual, having survived lung cancer for 22 years, receiving treatment at the Karmanos Cancer Center. Despite experiencing vocal changes following surgery, he maintained a strong spirit and faced his final year with remarkable fortitude.
James A. Smith was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tom Smith. He is survived by his three children, his eleven grandchildren, and three siblings: David (Stephanie), Dan (Diana) Smith, and Barbara (Bob) Struber, along with extended family members, including brothers-in-law Joe Santini and Jim (Susan) Santini and numerous nieces and nephews.
Throughout his life, Smith remained active in the legal profession as a lifelong member of the State Bar of Michigan, participating in the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, and also served his local community as a dedicated member of Grace Episcopal Church in Mt. Clemens.
A Memorial Gathering is scheduled for September 29, 2025, from 4 to 8 PM at Chas. Verheyden, Inc. in Clinton Township, followed by a Memorial Service on September 30, 2025, at 11 AM at Grace Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Grace Episcopal Church and Karmanos Cancer Center to honor his legacy.
