Detroit Man Charged with Manslaughter for Fatal Gas Station Assault

A 26-year-old Detroit man, Javonte Rayshawn Barber, has been formally charged with manslaughter in connection to a fatal assault that took place at a gas station on June 27, 2025. The incident has drawn attention from local law enforcement and the community due to its abrupt escalation and tragic outcome.

The altercation occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at a gas station located in the 11600 block of East McNichols Road. During the incident, Barber engaged in a verbal argument with Samuel Spruill Jr., a 44-year-old man from Troy. The disagreement quickly turned physical, culminating in Barber striking Spruill in the face.

As a result of the punch, Spruill lost his balance and fell to the ground, hitting his head on the pavement. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene and transported Spruill to a nearby hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

The Detroit Police Department immediately initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Barber was apprehended shortly after the event was reported. Following his arrest, he was arraigned on June 30, 2025, in 36th District Court before Magistrate Joseph Boyer.

At the arraignment, Barber’s bond was set at $100,000 cash/surety. In addition to the financial stipulation, he has been ordered to wear a GPS tether and remain under house arrest as part of the conditions of his release. A bond re-determination hearing has been scheduled for July 2 at 9 a.m., providing the court an opportunity to reassess the conditions of Barber’s bond.

Furthermore, a probable cause conference has been set for July 10, where evidence and rationale for the charges will be discussed. Following this, a preliminary examination is scheduled for July 17, which will further outline the prosecution’s case against Barber.

The information regarding the charges and subsequent proceedings comes from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, which is overseeing the case. This incident not only raises questions about public safety at local establishments but also highlights the seriousness of escalating conflicts and their potential consequences.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of how quickly disagreements can change lives forever. The local community remains on alert as the case continues to unfold in the upcoming weeks, as many residents and family members of both the victim and the accused await the judicial process to proceed.
