News Summary
Motorists in Detroit should prepare for significant closures on Interstate 75 due to essential bridge repair work. Starting July 11, southbound lanes will close from Springwells Road to Schaefer Road, with detours in place. Following this, northbound I-75 will also experience closures from Schaefer Road to I-96. These weekend closures, part of a broader infrastructure project, aim to enhance road safety and extend the lifespan of key bridges. Local drivers are advised to use alternate routes during this time to avoid delays.
Detroit, Michigan – Significant portions of Interstate 75 will be closed over the next few weekends as crews undertake essential bridge work, beginning on July 11, 2025. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is supervising this project aimed at enhancing road safety and infrastructure.
The first phase of these closures will commence with the shutdown of southbound I-75 from Springwells Road to Schaefer Road, starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 11, and concluding at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 14. During this time, motorists will be redirected via westbound I-96, westbound I-94, and southbound I-275 to rejoin I-75. Local drivers can utilize Fort Street as an alternate route while the southbound closure is in effect.
Following the closure of southbound lanes, northbound I-75 will face similar restrictions, with closures set to take place from Schaefer Road to I-96 beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 18, and reopening on July 21 at 5 a.m. Drivers traveling from Monroe County on northbound I-75 will be detoured to northbound I-275 before accessing I-94 to reach I-75 in Detroit. As with the previous closure, Fort Street will remain available for local traffic during this time.
These are the first of a total of 16 weekend closures that will be required as part of the larger project, designed to apply an epoxy overlay to four bridges. These include the I-75 Rouge River bridge, the I-75 bridge over Fort Street, and the ramp bridges, all of which had their decks replaced in a previous project completed in 2017-2018.
The initial phase of the project kicked off in late April 2025, involving short-term weeknight closures dedicated to pier patching work on 230 piers supporting the various bridges. This preparatory phase is crucial for the upcoming bridge work, ensuring the infrastructure remains safe and effective for commuters.
MDOT remains focused on maintaining and enhancing the reliability of Michigan’s roadways through ongoing maintenance projects like this one. The bridge work plays a pivotal role in extending the lifespan of the structures while promoting safe travel conditions for both local residents and visitors.
Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and to allow for extra travel time during the closures. With the nature of the work necessitating repeated weekend shutdowns, drivers will want to stay informed about the latest updates and modifications to travel routes. MDOT encourages all drivers to remain vigilant on the road and adhere to posted detour signs during the bridge work.
