Meisner is survived by his devoted wife, Anita L. Mitton, along with his two children, Derek M. Meisner and Randall S. Meisner. Derek is married to Lara and is the father of Zachary and Ellie, while Randall is married to Kelly and has three children: Olivia, Samantha, and Maxwell. Additionally, Meisner leaves behind stepchildren Jessica Miles and JD Mitton, along with a step-grandchild named Lyndon, and a long-time friend, M. Katherine Michael, who served as his dedicated paralegal for 41 years. He was also an owner of several beloved Beagles.
Born in 1944 in Detroit, Michigan, Meisner graduated from the University of Michigan before earning his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. He founded a successful law practice in Bingham Farms, where he represented clients for over 55 years. Known for his expertise in community association law, Meisner also contributed to legal education by teaching at two law schools and speaking at various educational seminars both in Michigan and nationally.
His contributions to the field included authoring the well-regarded book Condo Living 2 and co-drafting the 1978 Michigan Condominium Act, which has had a lasting impact on real estate law in the state. Meisner’s hard work and dedication to his clients and the legal community did not go unrecognized. He was a five-time Michigan Super Lawyer and was honored as one of the 2014 Leaders in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. He received several accolades throughout his career, including being selected three times as a Top Metro Detroit Lawyer and earning the prestigious Hall of Fame Award from Michigan Lawyers Weekly.
In recognition of his commitment to the legal profession and community, he was inducted into the College of Community Association Lawyers at the Community Associations Institute. He was also recognized by the State Bar of Michigan on the occasion of its 50th Golden Anniversary.
Meisner’s funeral took place on July 28, 2025, at The Davidson/Hermelin Chapel at Clover Hill Park Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by The Ira Kaufman Chapel. In honor of Robert M. Meisner’s legacy, donations can be made to Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Michigan Humane Society, or PETA.
