Detroit – A 78-year-old man has been charged with multiple offenses after allegedly shooting three senior citizens in a dispute at a senior living apartment complex. The incident took place on Monday evening around 9:30 p.m. in the 7500 block of Jefferson Avenue near Sheridan Street. James Albert Britton now faces 13 charges, including four counts of assault with intent to murder.
In addition to the assault charges, Britton is charged with one count each of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, and six counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony. His bond has been set at $500,000, with conditions that include wearing a GPS tether, remaining under house arrest, avoiding contact with the victims, and refraining from possessing any weapons if released.
If convicted, Britton could face significant prison time. Each assault charge carries a potential penalty of up to life in prison, while the other gun-related offenses have lesser penalties of up to five years and two years, respectively.
During his arraignment at the 36th District Court on Thursday, Britton requested a court-appointed attorney to assist in his legal defense. The case has drawn considerable attention due to the nature of the incident and the age of those involved.
The shooting reportedly stemmed from a dispute over loud music during a barbecue at the apartment complex. Authorities have described the incident as a “ridiculous escalation” of what should have been a minor issue among neighbors. The victims include a 64-year-old man who was grazed on the cheek, a 65-year-old man who sustained gunshot wounds to the right armpit and abdomen, and a 70-year-old woman who was shot in her left ankle. Fortunately, all three victims, along with Britton, are expected to recover.
The confrontation escalated to violence when the 65-year-old victim attempted to tackle Britton, causing him to drop his weapon. In a turn of events, a 62-year-old woman with whom Britton had a past relationship picked up the dropped gun and shot him in the left thigh while defending herself during the altercation.
The incident has sparked concerns about safety in senior living facilities. In response, Detroit City Councilwoman Mary Waters has initiated work sessions aimed at addressing gun violence, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children and seniors. Waters emphasized the urgency of implementing conflict resolution teams to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of residents in similar communities.
As the case proceeds, authorities continue to stress the importance of community safety and conflict resolution, particularly in environments meant for senior citizens. The incident highlights a growing need for protective measures and dialogue to mitigate violence in shared living conditions for seniors.
