The redevelopment of the St. Matthew School, which closed its doors in 2008, took place over several years and incurred a cost of $20.49 million. The project was executed in partnership with Cinnaire Solutions, a nonprofit real estate development organization. This initiative is part of a broader mission by Catholic Charities USA to create affordable housing throughout the United States, with development efforts initiated in 2018.

The new residents have access to 46 affordable apartments, divided as follows: 21 units for low-income tenants and 25 units designated as permanent supportive housing for individuals who were previously homeless. The facility comprises 36 one-bedroom units, 4 two-bedroom units, and 6 studio units, making it a versatile option for various demographics within the community.

Funding for this project involved collaboration with multiple sources, including the Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s Low Income Housing Tax Credits, the Federal Home Loan Bank, City of Detroit HOME Funds, and the Michigan Historic Preservation Tax Credit. Additionally, various foundations contributed donations, including furniture provided by the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph.

At the ceremony, the Detroit Auxiliary Bishop blessed the new residences, which have been referred to as a “beacon of hope” by project leaders.
