The Residences at St. Matthew: A new chapter in affordable housing for Detroit
A former school building in Detroit, now known as The Residences at St. Matthew, has been converted into an affordable housing complex. Officially opened on May 7, this initiative, sponsored by Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan, addresses the critical housing shortage in the community by providing 46 affordable apartments, including permanent supportive housing for the homeless. The project cost $20.49 million and includes partnerships with various organizations. The redevelopment reflects a growing movement to repurpose vacant properties for housing solutions in Detroit.
Detroit – A former school building on the east side of Detroit has been transformed into a vital affordable housing complex, officially named The Residences at St. Matthew. The project was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on May 7, sponsored by Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan. The facility aims to provide affordable housing solutions to individuals in need, as the community grapples with a significant shortage of such options.
The redevelopment of the St. Matthew School, which closed its doors in 2008, took place over several years and incurred a cost of $20.49 million. The project was executed in partnership with Cinnaire Solutions, a nonprofit real estate development organization. This initiative is part of a broader mission by Catholic Charities USA to create affordable housing throughout the United States, with development efforts initiated in 2018.
The new residents have access to 46 affordable apartments, divided as follows: 21 units for low-income tenants and 25 units designated as permanent supportive housing for individuals who were previously homeless. The facility comprises 36 one-bedroom units, 4 two-bedroom units, and 6 studio units, making it a versatile option for various demographics within the community.
Funding for this project involved collaboration with multiple sources, including the Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s Low Income Housing Tax Credits, the Federal Home Loan Bank, City of Detroit HOME Funds, and the Michigan Historic Preservation Tax Credit. Additionally, various foundations contributed donations, including furniture provided by the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph.
At the ceremony, the Detroit Auxiliary Bishop blessed the new residences, which have been referred to as a “beacon of hope” by project leaders. This reflects the project’s commitment to assisting residents in overcoming not only housing insecurity but also issues related to addiction and employment. Collaborative efforts with Henry Ford St. John Hospital are set to provide integrated health services to enhance the overall well-being of residents.
Detroit Mayor, who has personal ties to the community as a former parishioner baptized at St. Matthew, praised the initiative. He emphasized the importance of addressing the city’s ongoing housing challenges and the project’s role in contributing to solutions. The project aligns with ongoing discussions around permanent supportive housing, crucial for bolstering mental health and financial stability among the homeless population in Detroit.
The St. Matthew School has a rich history, serving over 1,000 students during its operation and employing numerous educators before its closure. Now, its transformation into affordable housing reflects a growing movement in Detroit to repurpose vacant school buildings and create meaningful solutions to the city’s housing crisis.
The completion of The Residences at St. Matthew represents a renewed sense of community and serves as a functional model for future housing initiatives aimed at addressing critical social needs. This project underscores the significance of partnerships and the role of local parishes in providing dedicated outreach and support to individuals facing challenges.
As the city continues to seek innovative solutions to its housing deficits, The Residences at St. Matthew stands as a testament to collaboration and community-focused development efforts. It aims to rebuild lives and foster an environment where every resident can thrive.
