Mackinac Island, Michigan — Amazon hosted a lunch-and-learn session at the 2025 Mackinac Policy Conference, showcasing successful collaborations that contribute to community strengthening across Michigan. The event served as a platform for discussion on how Michigan nonprofits and government entities can work with Amazon to prepare land for development and stimulate local economic growth.

The session highlighted Amazon’s significant expansion in Michigan since the launch of its Livonia and Romulus Performance Centers in 2018. The company now operates 26 facilities statewide and has created over 22,000 jobs. The rapid growth has been attributed to Amazon’s “customer-obsessed” work model, which aims to enhance relationships beyond traditional consumer-to-business transactions.

A notable aspect of Amazon’s strategy is its emphasis on partnerships with both private and public entities. This includes collaboration with the City of Detroit and various local organizations for talent identification and site selection, a key example being the Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit. Moreover, Amazon aims to connect local communities to its operations as it seeks to address the absence of large buildings in urban areas.

During the conference, it was shared that approximately 60% of vendors on the Amazon platform are local small businesses, highlighting the importance of local economic integration. This initiative not only supports community members but also strengthens recognition of local providers within the Amazon ecosystem. Panelists at the event provided guidance on how other Michigan municipalities could foster partnerships with Amazon for potential site considerations.

Efficient communication is essential for fostering these partnerships, with a focus on promptly responding to calls or emails from Amazon representatives. Communities are encouraged to clearly articulate their readiness to engage with Amazon to enhance the opportunity for collaboration.

Over the past five years, Amazon has invested around $5 million into more than 150 hyper-local organizations to bolster community initiatives. This commitment reflects Amazon’s proactive stance in community engagement and development.

In addition to Amazon’s community efforts, the conference witnessed announcements around new business developments. PizzaForno disclosed a 40-unit development agreement featuring five new automated pizzeria locations in Michigan, including a setup at the Amazon Distribution Center in Grand Rapids. This collaboration aims to offer Amazon employees convenient meal options at their workplace.

Furthermore, Kim Nhung Superfood Inc. is preparing to occupy a space that was originally designated for an Amazon Fresh grocery in Madison Heights. The company plans to adapt the facilities to serve as a central hub focusing on Asian groceries, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and inventory accommodation.

Despite these developments, the rollout of Amazon Fresh in Southeast Michigan has been sluggish, with several locations, including those in Madison Heights and Dearborn, facing delays or cancellations. However, there is ongoing interest in leasing spaces that were previously designated for Amazon Fresh as the company seeks to strategically strengthen its grocery market presence.

The session, hosted by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, emphasized relevant topics such as regional economics, workforce development, and industry clusters, contributing valuable insights into the future of economic growth within Michigan.
