Growing Craft Beer Industry

The craft beer industry in Michigan has experienced notable growth, with over 50 breweries in the metro Detroit area. New entrants into the market, including Roar Brewing Co. in Midtown, are set to further enrich the local craft beer landscape. Scheduled to open on March 23, 2025, Roar Brewing Co. will make history as Detroit’s first Black-owned brewery. It will launch its operations at the former Nain Rouge Brewery site, aiming to foster a strong community atmosphere by hosting watch parties and social events.

Roar Brewing Co. plans to introduce a flagship beer, the Honey Oat Stout, along with other approachable options such as Pilsner and Wheat Beer. The brewery is dedicated to educating visitors about the brewing process and the rich history of beer in Detroit.

Collaborative Efforts and Unique Offerings

In addition to new establishments, the craft beer scene maintains a vibrant presence through collaborative efforts. Griffin Claw Brewing has partnered with The Henry Ford to create three distinctive craft beers inspired by the Greenfield Village. These beers include:

  • Detroit Central Ale: A smooth British ale featuring caramel, toffee, and chocolate malt flavors, inspired by the Detroit Central Market.
  • Hostler’s Lager: A crisp lager paying tribute to the railroad workers at Greenfield Village.
  • Dew Drop Pilsner: A refreshing West Coast-style pilsner inspired by 19th-century baseball games at the village.

This collaboration follows a successful holiday beer project between the brewery and the museum in 2024, showcasing the innovative spirit of the local craft beer community.

Challenges and Resilience

Despite facing industry downturns since 2020, the craft beer scene in Metro Detroit continues to flourish with new openings and established favorites maintaining their popularity. The growth of the craft beer sector demonstrates resilience and adaptability, reflecting a robust local demand for unique and quality brews. Many breweries now offer online ordering, making it easier for consumers to support local businesses and enjoy their favorite beers from home.

As nominations for the best brewery in Metro Detroit remain open until mid-June, local craft beer enthusiasts are encouraged to take an active role in recognizing their favorites. With the upcoming voting period aligned with significant community events, excitement is brewing in the heart of Detroit’s craft beer culture.
