Detroit, MI – The BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival will return to Detroit from September 7 to 17, 2023, showcasing 25 large-scale murals throughout the North End and Highland Park areas. This biannual celebration is a Black-led immersive art event that aims to highlight the contributions of BIPOC artists and foster a sense of community through creative expression.
This year’s festival will introduce installations at Pensole Lewis College, coinciding with its support for the Black Footwear Forum. Organizers have expanded the event to include diverse artistic voices by featuring 10 muralists, five hailing from Detroit and five from across the nation. Participation reflects a commitment to equitable representation, with approximately 75% of participating artists and event producers identifying as Black and/or people of color.
The festival’s 2023 theme is resilience, focusing on the narratives and voices of BIPOC communities. Muralists will engage with community members to share personal meanings and stories behind their artwork, linking these creations to significantly shaped cultural heritages and experiences.
Free public artist talks will take place at Pensole Lewis College on September 9, 10, and 11. These discussions will cover various topics including “The Future of Art,” “Women on the Walls,” and “The Art of Business.” These forums are designed to foster collaboration and public discussion, with an emphasis on connecting local narratives to broader artistic themes.
The festival will culminate in a lively block party on September 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chroma building. This vibrant community gathering will feature live music, food trucks, and local vendors, as well as opportunities for festival attendees to meet the participating muralists and engage with their work.
Support for the festival comes from various sponsors, notably City Walls Detroit as the Platinum Sponsor for the 2025 event, along with Gold Sponsors including Pensole Lewis College, the Knight Foundation, and the Kresge Foundation. Additionally, the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) partners with the festival to inspire and educate local youth artistic talent.
The BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival debuted in 2021, with nearly 20 murals completed in its inaugural year. The festival was co-founded by three artists in response to a notable lack of representation and fair compensation for Black artists in the mural sector. It places a high priority on the equitable treatment of artists by ensuring they receive stipends for their contributions, along with additional support for lodging, meals, and transportation expenses.
The success of the inaugural event led to increased acknowledgment and participation in the subsequent years, making the BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival an anticipated highlight in Detroit’s cultural landscape. Participants can track progress on the new murals using a virtual mural map and artist directory, enhancing accessibility for community and street art fans.
As the festival gears up for another successful year, many artists have expressed excitement about returning to showcase their work and connect with the local community. The festival remains committed to creating opportunities for aspiring artists and nurturing a strong collaborative spirit among residents and artists alike.
