Brandon Waddles Takes Role in Revived ‘The Wiz’ Tour

News Summary

Brandon Waddles has left his position as director of choral activities at Wayne State University to join the touring revival of ‘The Wiz’ as pianist and associate music director. A Detroit native, Waddles has a long history with the production, having experienced its cultural significance from a young age. The revival, under the direction of Schele Williams, features contemporary musical styles and aims to reflect the evolution of African-American music, while Waddles continues to teach remotely for Wayne State.

Detroit – Brandon Waddles has departed from his role as director of choral activities at Wayne State University’s Department of Music to take on the position of pianist and associate music director for the current touring revival of “The Wiz.” This marks Waddles’ first experience traveling with a theatrical production.

At 37 years old, Waddles, a Detroit native and son of noted musician Alvin Waddles, has long been connected with “The Wiz.” His connection dates back to his childhood, where he first witnessed the musical during its revival tour in Detroit in the early 1990s. The original “The Wiz” notably premiered in Detroit in 1974 before moving to Broadway in 1975. The show itself is an adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” re-envisioned through a Black cultural lens and enriched with a score that prominently features elements of soul, gospel, and funk.

The latest revival of “The Wiz,” directed by Schele Williams, aims to reimagine the classic rather than simply retell it. This version includes contemporary musical styles like R&B, rap, and New Orleans second-line rhythms. Notably, it incorporates a new song titled “Wonder, Wonder Why,” which had previously been cut in earlier performances before the Broadway debut.

Music supervision for this revival is overseen by Joseph Joubert, one of Waddles’ mentors. Waddles highlights the continuous evolution of African-American music and how this production reflects that progression. While Waddles transitions to his new role, he continues to teach an African-American music history course remotely for Wayne State University, maintaining his ties to education.

Throughout his career, Waddles has held various positions at institutions including the University of Michigan, Morehouse College, and Brigham Young University. In addition to his contributions to “The Wiz,” he serves as the musical director for singer Ledisi and conducts performances of Alice Coltrane’s music, showcasing his wide-ranging talents in different musical contexts.

The choreography and visual design of this production of “The Wiz” draw inspiration from the culture of HBCU marching bands and various dance styles, creating a vibrant and dynamic theatrical experience. Critics have noted that the show addresses significant issues of diversity and inclusion, using its entertainment value to convey powerful messages.

Audience reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the atmosphere as energetic and receptive, indicative of a strong desire for the themes and messages presented in the show. “The Wiz” will be performed at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit from June 17 through June 29, featuring a talented cast that includes Dana Cimone as Dorothy and Alan Mingo Jr. as The Wiz. Waddles will also conduct afternoon matinee shows during this period.

Tickets for the performances are available at prices ranging from $46.80 to $169.65, with a variety of showtimes scheduled throughout the run, ensuring accessibility to a broad audience.
