Detroit – A 41-year-old Canton man, Amir Khalid, has been charged following a tragic car crash in Detroit that led to the deaths of two sisters and serious injuries to a teenager. Khalid was arraigned on August 25 in 36th District Court and faces three charges, including two counts of reckless driving causing death and one count of reckless driving causing serious injury.

Khalid’s bond has been set at $250,000, with strict conditions that include wearing a GPS tether, adhering to a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and being prohibited from driving. He is scheduled to appear for a probable cause conference on September 4, followed by a preliminary examination on September 11.

The fatal crash occurred early on Saturday, August 23, at approximately 12:39 a.m., on Gratiot Avenue near August Street. Witnesses and investigators allege that Khalid was driving recklessly, at speeds estimated to be around 80 mph in a 35 mph zone, when he collided with the vehicle occupied by the victims.

The two sisters, identified as 8-year-old Savannah Allen and 15-year-old Syiana Allen, both from Detroit, were later pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital. A 16-year-old female passenger in their vehicle sustained serious injuries from the incident.

The crash has garnered significant attention as a GoFundMe page has been set up by the victims’ family to raise funds for the sisters’ funerals, with a goal of $20,000. As of last Friday, nearly $6,000 had been raised. The organizer of the GoFundMe expressed profound heartbreak over the sisters’ loss, describing them as “vibrant, loving, and full of life.”

This accident has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding road safety in the area, as residents have been calling for improvements to make driving conditions safer. In the week following the crash, Michigan State Police reported that 38 people had died on state roads, with the total number of fatalities this year reaching 641. Additionally, 138 serious injuries were recorded in Michigan during that week, bringing the total for the year to 3,411 injuries.

The crash involving Khalid is a part of a troubling trend within Detroit and the surrounding areas, as officials have noted a growing number of reckless driving incidents. Thankfully, the city has recently received funding aimed at making safety improvements along the Gratiot corridor, which includes measures to address the unsafe driving conditions reported by residents.

The community continues to mourn the loss of the two young sisters, and the repercussions of this crash have raised urgent discussions about road safety measures that need to be implemented to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
