Dearborn Conducts First Public Health Assessment Identifying Key Challenges

Dearborn’s Department of Public Health has released its first comprehensive public health assessment, identifying child poverty, environmental health, and mental well-being as critical issues facing residents. The assessment, completed in late July, draws from a survey of 1,127 residents and includes insights from focus groups encompassing diverse community members, such as caregivers, young and older adults, and individuals with disabilities.

Mayor Abdullah Hammoud highlighted the importance of this assessment in providing essential data to direct policymaking and program design aimed at fostering a healthier community. The report outlines four main health priorities: environmental health, mental and behavioral health, child and maternal health, and community health resources, education, and literacy.

Key Findings

The findings of the assessment reveal that a staggering over one-third of children in Dearborn live below the federal poverty line, which has led the city to enroll in the Rx Kids program. This program provides direct cash assistance to pregnant women and new mothers to combat child poverty issues. Approximately 64% of all births in Dearborn were covered by Medicaid in 2023, significantly surpassing Michigan’s average of 39%.

Generational reproductive statistics indicate that 28% of women aged 30-35 gave birth in 2023 compared to 10% in the same age group across the state, while 15% of women aged 25-29 had recent births. Additionally, the assessment found that 20% of residents reported experiencing poor mental health in the previous month, with many citing stigma as a barrier preventing individuals from seeking help.

Environmental Concerns and Access to Healthcare

Environmental health emerged as a significant concern, especially among residents in the south and east sections of Dearborn, where worries about air quality and pollution were prevalent. Furthermore, many residents expressed difficulty accessing accurate and updated information regarding health resources, underscoring the need for improved communication channels to better address these challenges.

According to the assessment, 24.3% of residents live below the federal poverty line, and a substantial 91.7% have access to high-speed internet, suggesting that while connectivity may be widespread, socioeconomic challenges remain significant. The report also noted that 8.4% of residents under the age of 65 have a disability, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced health equity efforts in the community.

Future Implications and Ongoing Assessments

The results of this public health evaluation are expected to serve as the foundation for a continuous assessment process designed to gather data on Dearborn’s health needs over time. The Director of the Public Health Department emphasized the goal of utilizing real-time data from both private and public sources to enhance future assessments. Moreover, the assessment aims to reflect the lived experiences of Dearborn residents, incorporating cultural inclusivity that particularly acknowledges the Middle Eastern and North African populations within the city.

Mayor Hammoud described the assessment as a compass for health policies, aiming to ensure a clean, green, and healthy environment for all residents of Dearborn. The complete report is accessible on the City of Dearborn’s website under current news and featured stories, providing a resource for the community and policymakers alike.
