Detroit Dogs Monroe and Gideon Suffer Severe Burns from Cruelty

News Summary

Monroe, a dog in Detroit, is receiving treatment for severe burns believed to be caused by animal cruelty, marking a disturbing trend alongside Gideon’s similar case. Both dogs were rescued and are under medical care as advocates call for stronger animal protection laws amidst alarming incidents of abuse in the city.

Detroit – A dog named Monroe is currently receiving medical treatment after suffering severe burns believed to be a case of animal cruelty. This incident marks the second case of such cruelty reported in the city in recent weeks, raising alarms among animal advocates regarding a potential connection between the two cases.

Monroe is under the care of Dr. Lucretia Greear at Woodhaven Animal Hospital, where medical staff are closely monitoring her recovery. Monroe was rescued by the Great Lakes Bully Brigade from Detroit Animal Care and Control (DACC), which picked her up about three miles away from another dog, Memphis, who was previously discovered in a similarly dire situation. Memphis had been doused with hot grease by its owner and was brought to DACC by a concerned citizen after the dog was found near Dexter Avenue and W. Boston Boulevard.

The timeline of these two incidents is alarming. Monroe was picked up on May 2 from Meyers Road near Grand River Avenue, only a short distance from where Memphis was discovered. Although Monroe and Memphis share similar injuries, there is currently no evidence linking the two cases, as DACC has not identified any suspects in either incident.

The Great Lakes Bully Brigade has dedicated approximately $5,000 to provide medical care for both Monroe and Memphis. Community support has been mobilized through the Animal Resource Funding Foundation, which is matching donations to assist with Monroe’s veterinary expenses. This organization has pointed out that cases of animal abuse often incur significant medical bills, necessitating financial support for the animals’ recovery.

Although doctors predict that Monroe will fully recover from her injuries in the coming weeks, there is significant concern regarding the broader implications of these cases. Dr. Greear has expressed apprehension that without strengthened animal welfare laws in Michigan, similar incidents of brutality may continue to occur. DACC officials are actively encouraging the public to report any witnessed or suspected cases of animal abuse through their hotline at 313-922-DOGS.

In a separate but equally disturbing case, authorities are investigating the alleged abuse of a 3-month-old Jack Russell Terrier named Gideon. Reports indicate that Gideon suffered third-degree burns inflicted by a 19-year-old woman as a result of a conflict with her mother. The Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) intervened on January 12, rescuing Gideon after it became aware of the severity of his injuries.

Like Monroe, Gideon has required extensive medical treatment, including bandage changes, pain medication, and skin grafts to aid in his recovery. DAWG’s director has noted that in her 13 years of experience in animal rescue, she has never encountered such severe cases of cruelty as seen in Gideon’s situation. After initially displaying signs of pain and trauma, Gideon is gradually healing and has started to show signs of playfulness.

DAWG has been in communication with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, which is currently gathering evidence regarding Gideon’s case. However, as of now, no charges have been filed. Advocates from DAWG remain vigilant, calling for justice for Gideon and expressing significant concern over the possibility of further animal abuse tied to the alleged perpetrator.

Gideon’s distressing story has garnered national attention, resulting in considerable community fundraising efforts to support his ongoing medical care. Animal welfare advocates continue to rally around all affected animals, emphasizing the urgent need for better protection against animal cruelty in the region.
