Detroit is set to host the much-anticipated 6th Annual Detroit Black Film Festival (DBFF), running from September 25-28, 2025. Organized by Trinity Films Entertainment Group, the festival will showcase a total of 72 films from 30 countries, solidifying its reputation as Michigan’s premier film festival focused on Black filmmakers.

This year, the festival continues its tradition of highlighting the diverse narratives and experiences within the Black community, featuring a wide range of genres. Attendees can expect a blend of documentaries and character-driven dramas that aim to spark meaningful discussions and reflections on Black life and culture. The previous festivals have successfully screened over 500 films by Black filmmakers over the last six years, demonstrating the growing demand and appreciation for these cinematic stories.

Among the standout events this year is the 14th edition of the Taste of Black Spirits Collective Behavior Tour, scheduled for September 27 at the Doubletree Hotel Crystal Ballroom. This year’s theme, “Cinema, Culture & Cocktails,” integrates the celebration of film with Black cultural heritage and an assortment of premium spirits. Guests will be able to explore over 100 spirit brands, including notable names like Ronald Isley Liquid Gold, Loyalty Wines by J. Prince, Sable Bourbon by Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs, and Zawadi Vodka. Mixologists will cater to the event by serving handcrafted cocktails from 6 to 11 p.m. for attendees aged 21 and over.

The DBFF honors contributions from the film industry, particularly those emerging from Detroit. This year’s festival will introduce a special segment dedicated to recognizing local film industry contributors. This emphasis aligns with the festival’s overarching goal of promoting stories that originate from Black independent filmmakers.

The festival will also feature panel discussions that involve filmmakers and other industry experts, providing attendees with insights into the creative processes and challenges faced by these artists. Additionally, the exclusive premiere of the film “Albany Road,” directed by Christine Swanson, will be a highlight. The film focuses on the relationship between two women and delves into themes of healing and forgiveness, underscoring the personal narratives that are central to the festival’s mission.

The Detroit Black Film Festival provides an inclusive environment for all film enthusiasts, with ticket prices set at $35 for a one-day pass, $100 for a full festival pass, and $225 for a combined access ticket to both the film festival and the Taste of Black Spirits event. This pricing structure ensures that a broad audience can participate in the celebration of Black artistry and culture.

The festival is supported by contributions from the Ford Foundation and will take place in partnership with host venues like the Michigan State University Detroit Center and the Marlene Boll Theater. Through its carefully curated selection of films and cultural events, the DBFF aims to provide a vibrant platform for showcasing Black creativity through both the cinematic arts and meaningful cultural experiences.

As anticipation builds for the 2025 festival, enthusiasm continues to grow for an enriching and spectacular event that not only entertains but also educates and inspires through the lens of Black filmmakers.
