A 19-year-old man from Detroit lost his life in a high-speed crash on I-96 on the morning of July 23, 2025. The accident occurred on the Oakland County/Livingston County border at approximately 9:30 a.m. as the teenager was driving a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu at speeds reportedly exceeding 100 miles per hour.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver was traveling in the right lane of westbound I-96 before swerving into the middle lane. This maneuver resulted in the vehicle colliding with another car, which triggered a chain reaction that caused both vehicles to lose control. The Chevrolet Malibu ultimately struck a third vehicle, leading to it overturning and subsequently hitting a construction traffic trailer on the roadside.
The driver of the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Two passengers in the vehicle, both also aged 19—one from Detroit and another from West Bloomfield—sustained injuries, though the extent of their injuries has not been confirmed. One driver of the other vehicles involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.

Motorists faced significant delays, with all lanes blocked starting at Milford Road in Oakland County. Detours were established directing drivers southbound on Milford Road to westbound on Grand River, and then northbound on Kensington Road to rejoin westbound I-96.
