The explosion was nothing short of destructive, tearing apart bricks and compromising the building’s structural integrity. The powerful blast left the apartment complex in ruins, and as firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the scene, it became clear that the situation was dire.
In total, 13 individuals were hospitalized due to the incident, among them a heartbreaking six children. Emergency responders quickly assessed the situation, and it was confirmed that among the injured, three individuals—including a young girl—were in critical condition. A 30-year-old man suffered severe burns, while a 27-year-old woman was also among those affected.

Witnesses recounted the explosion sounding like “a bomb”, and residents described a scene of pandemonium as they fought to escape the crumbling structure.
Thanks to the rapid response of local fire, police, and homeland security officials, 12 residents were successfully rescued, including some who were perilously close to jumping from second-story windows in their attempts to escape. Thermal imaging drones were employed by fire department officials to confirm that everyone was evacuated from the building safely.
This disturbing incident left the community shaken. One resident noted that they were abruptly awakened by the explosion, initially falling prey to the anxiety that this might be a terrorist attack. It was later revealed that the building was already slated for demolition due to safety concerns, making the aftermath of this explosion even more unnerving.
DTE Energy was promptly on-site to investigate the explosion, but initial inquiries revealed no gas leaks were reported in the days leading up to the disaster. It’s worth noting that the property, which had previously been listed for sale at $439,000, now lies in shambles, and investigators are working diligently to determine the cause of the explosion.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Detroit Housing Revitalization Department is stepping in to assist those displaced. Temporary housing solutions are being coordinated for residents who can no longer call this complex home. Meanwhile, DTE Energy and other support crews are assisting families in salvaging any personal belongings they can before the site is completely demolished.
