Detroit Man Charged with Murder After Fatal High-Speed Chase

News Summary

A 33-year-old man from Detroit has been charged with second-degree murder following a high-speed police chase that led to the death of a 71-year-old woman. On May 24, during a reckless pursuit, the suspect drove over 100 mph before crashing into another vehicle. The victim, Wendy Drew, succumbed to her injuries shortly after the incident. The accused fled the scene but was apprehended by the police. He faces multiple charges, including fleeing law enforcement and assaulting an officer.

Warren, Michigan – A 33-year-old Detroit man, Anthony Eugene-Douglas Grier, Jr., has been charged with second-degree murder and multiple other offenses following a high-speed police chase that resulted in the death of a 71-year-old woman.

The charges were filed in relation to an incident that occurred on May 24, 2025, when Grier allegedly drove a Chrysler 300 at dangerously high speeds, striking another vehicle and causing severe injuries to its occupant, Wendy Drew. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The chase began shortly before the fatal crash, around 9:30 p.m., when Warren police attempted to stop Grier for speeding. He was reportedly driving at 70 mph in a 40 mph zone, and when officers activated their lights and sirens, Grier refused to pull over. Instead, he sped off, leading police on a reckless pursuit that included driving on sidewalks, through the middle turn lane, and ignoring multiple traffic signals. At its peak, Grier’s speed exceeded 100 mph.

The collision occurred at the intersection of South Van Dyke Avenue and 9 Mile Road, where Grier’s vehicle struck another car, resulting in Drew’s fatal injuries. She was the only occupant of her vehicle and was transported to the hospital, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.

Following the crash, Grier fled the scene on foot but was apprehended by authorities shortly thereafter. He has since been charged with several offenses, which include:

  • Count 1: Homicide-murder-second degree, which carries potential penalties of life imprisonment or a lengthy prison term.
  • Count 2: Fleeing and eluding police-first degree, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
  • Count 3: Assaulting, resisting, or obstructing police, which carries a penalty of up to two years in prison and/or a $2,000 fine.

Grier was arraigned on May 27, 2025, in the 37th District Court of Warren, where his bail was denied, and he was remanded to custody. A probable cause conference is scheduled for June 5, 2025, followed by a preliminary hearing on June 12, 2025.

Grier has a documented criminal history that includes previous convictions for operating a vehicle on a suspended license, receiving and concealing stolen property, and prior offenses related to fleeing and eluding law enforcement. Notably, despite holding a valid driver’s license and having no active warrants, Grier chose to flee from officers during the incident.

Warren Police Commissioner Eric Hawkins addressed the concerning trend of increased police chases, stating that it is more of a societal issue than a problem directly related to police policy. He noted that all pursuits are reviewed to ensure they comply with departmental guidelines. In 2025, Warren has experienced a 50% decrease in police chases compared to the previous year, with many pursuits being terminated by officers or supervisors during the chase.

The tragic event highlights ongoing discussions regarding high-speed pursuits and their consequences for both drivers and the general public. The legal proceedings against Grier will unfold in the coming weeks as the Warren community seeks justice for Wendy Drew.
