Prominent Detroit Neurosurgeon’s Death Sparks Murder Trial

News Summary

Desmond Burks has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Dr. Devon Hoover, a respected neurosurgeon found dead in his home. Authorities discovered Hoover’s body wrapped in a blood-soaked carpet, and investigations revealed connections between Burks and the victim, including fraudulent transactions and a high volume of communications. As Burks awaits trial, many question the evidence against him and the circumstances surrounding Hoover’s tragic demise.

Detroit – Desmond Burks faces serious legal charges, including first-degree murder and felony murder, in the death of prominent neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover. Dr. Hoover, aged 53, was discovered deceased at his home in the Boston-Edison Historic District on April 23, 2023. The medical examiner determined that he died from two gunshot wounds to the back of his head, verified during an autopsy.

The grim discovery of Hoover’s body was made in an attic crawl space, where it had been wrapped in a blood-soaked carpet. At the time of his death, he was reportedly found wearing only socks. Authorities also uncovered that fraudulent transactions totaling over $30,000 had occurred in Hoover’s bank accounts shortly after his passing.

Burks, 34, was evaluated and deemed competent to stand trial as of March 7, 2025, following a psychological review. He is currently awaiting a preliminary examination scheduled for June 23, 2025, which is anticipated to last four days.

Prior to Hoover’s homicide, an incident involving Hoover’s white Range Rover raised suspicion. The vehicle was found abandoned, blocking a driveway, with blood discovered inside. The day after Hoover’s body was found, police conducted a welfare check after a family member expressed concern regarding his absence to visit a dying relative in Indiana.

During the exhaustive investigation, which involved the collaboration of more than 70 law enforcement officers across five states and three countries, over 300 pieces of evidence were collected, including 134 search warrants. The investigation revealed that Burks had an estimated 4,000 communications with Hoover’s phone, suggesting a close relationship that may have involved payment for sexual services.

Authorities also found Hoover’s cellphone at locations closely connected to Burks at the time of the murder, bolstering the case against him. Furthermore, several personal items belonging to Hoover, including watches, were discovered at Burks’ residence, providing additional evidence linking him to the crime.

Burks has a separate legal matter under investigation as well. He previously received a $1 million bond after being charged in a road rage incident where he allegedly assaulted a man named Reda Saleh, who later succumbed to his injuries.

As the case against Burks progresses, family and friends of Dr. Hoover have expressed suspicions regarding Burks’ involvement in his murder. The culmination of evidence collected by investigators will play a crucial role in the forthcoming trial, which will seek to determine Burks’ culpability in the tragic death of a respected member of the medical community.
