Detroit – The Detroit Parks Coalition (DPC) has unveiled a new and improved summer programming schedule alongside accessibility enhancements for 30 parks across the city. The initiatives are designed to enhance community engagement and promote the natural beauty and recreational opportunities available in Detroit’s public green spaces.
The enhanced programming will run from June 1 to September 30, 2025, featuring a range of family-friendly activities and accessible options for all residents. Central to this initiative is the introduction of two significant programs aimed at increasing park utilization: a free 120-page Pocket Guide to Detroit Parks and the We Walk Detroit program.
The Pocket Guide to Detroit Parks will serve as a comprehensive resource for locals to familiarize themselves with available parks and their amenities, helping to promote outdoor activities throughout the community. Additionally, the We Walk Detroit initiative will offer one-hour social and fitness walks in multiple parks, encouraging physical activity and community interaction. Participation in these walks is free, and online registration is available through the DPC’s website. All attendees will receive a specially designed t-shirt commemorating the program.
Expanded Yoga Offerings and Artistic Celebrations
This summer, the Yoga in the Parks program will expand to nine parks, thanks to a partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Daily yoga sessions will be facilitated by four different providers, catering to diverse skill levels and interests.
In a cultural initiative to honor the richness of Detroit’s parks and neighborhoods, saxophonist and composer Marcus Elliot has been commissioned for the creation of “Sounds from the Park”, a suite of five improvisational musical pieces. This composition is set to debut at the 2025 Freedom Arts Festival, showcasing the harmonious blend of nature and art in the community.
Collaborative Community Programs
The DPC is also launching the Pistons Neighbors Program, a partnership with the Detroit Pistons Foundation and City of Detroit Parks & Recreation Division. This program will offer free activities for all ages, including sports clinics, live music, dance classes, and visual arts workshops. Managed by Come Play Detroit, the program is funded through grants from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation and the William Davidson Foundation, ensuring recreational access to all members of the community.
An additional focus of the DPC is fostering youth engagement through the Youth Ambassador program, funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. This initiative will select seven Detroit residents aged 15-23 to represent their communities in park planning and development efforts. Each ambassador will work 10-15 hours per month for a stipend, contributing to social media outreach and community engagement endeavors.
Enhancing Digital Access in Parks
In an effort to address digital equity, the DPC has implemented a pilot project providing public Wi-Fi to five parks: Bradby, Chandler, Clark, McDuffy, and Palmer. This initiative, funded by $265,000 in grants from various organizations, began construction in summer 2023. Since its launch in January 2023, over 25,234 individuals have utilized the Wi-Fi services, emphasizing the importance of reliable internet access for educational and job-seeking purposes.
The DPC’s series of initiatives and enhancements demonstrate a concerted effort to improve access and engagement within Detroit’s parks, fostering a sense of community and promoting healthy lifestyles among its residents. These developments are expected to be instrumental in revitalizing interest in the city’s green spaces, making them accessible and enjoyable for all.
The combination of recreational activities, digital access, and community participation initiatives aims to create a welcoming environment that enriches the lives of Detroit’s residents.
