A Michigan State Police trooper was shot during a traffic stop on Friday, May 16, at approximately 7:40 p.m. The incident occurred on southbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) near Wyoming Avenue in Detroit. The trooper initiated the stop after observing a traffic violation, which escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the traffic stop, the trooper and the suspect, identified as a 41-year-old man from Highland Park, engaged in a physical altercation. The situation intensified when the suspect produced a firearm and fired multiple shots at the trooper, striking him three times. Fortunately, two of the bullets hit the trooper’s protective vest, while one bullet struck his shoulder.

In response to the gunfire, the trooper returned fire, fatally hitting the suspect. Both individuals sustained injuries during the exchange. The trooper was promptly transported to Sinai Grace Hospital for medical treatment. As of Saturday afternoon, he was released from the hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. As of now, authorities have not released the suspect’s name, and the investigation is ongoing. The Detroit Police Department Homicide Task Force is currently handling the case, and a handgun was recovered at the crime scene. After the incident, roads in the area were closed for investigation purposes.
