The State of the People POWER Tour, aimed at uniting Black leaders and communities, recently visited Detroit, providing vital resources and addressing socio-economic issues. The event featured influential speakers, community resource fairs, and discussions focused on community empowerment and activism against pressing challenges such as violence and food insecurity.
Detroit – The State of the People POWER Tour, a national initiative aimed at uniting Black leaders and communities amid significant political and economic shifts, made its recent stop in Detroit on May 21 and 22, 2024. This 11-city campaign, which began in April 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia, focuses on addressing critical issues facing African American communities.
The event took place at Wayne County Community College’s northwest campus and featured a broad array of influential speakers and community leaders, including Rev. Wendell Anthony of the Detroit Branch NAACP and former NBA star Jalen Rose. The agenda sought to engage families and individuals with vital resources while discussing pressing socio-economic concerns.
During the two-day event, attendees were provided with essential services including mental health support, food distribution, and utility assistance. Community resource fairs offered attendees access to housing assistance, health screenings, job opportunities, and information on voting. Additionally, food distribution was organized at the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, emphasizing the tour’s commitment to combating food insecurity.
Angela Rye, an attorney involved with the national committee for the tour, underscored the pervasive issues of community violence and food insecurity that disproportionately affect Black communities. The tour emphasizes the need to raise awareness and take action on these issues, facilitating discussions that cross economic boundaries and zip codes.
The event included panel discussions on topics such as Black economic power in Detroit and community violence intervention, along with workshops addressing health, renters’ rights, and small business support. Local volunteer organizer Zsa Zsa C. Hubbard highlighted the importance of empowering families and communities and the necessity for continued support that extends beyond election cycles.
The events commenced with a prayer from Rev. Cindy Rudolph, who called attention to various policies that have been viewed as detrimental under the current administration. Virgie Rollins, Chair of the Democratic National Committee’s Black Caucus, articulated that the current socio-political climate is critical and urged for heightened political activism to address emerging challenges.
Detroit holds historical significance as a hub for Black activism and is seen as a “beacon of hope.” The tour aims to reinforce that legacy while advocating for community empowerment. The convening featured a town hall-style discussion revolving around the “State of the People Black Paper,” a policy initiative conceived by over 100 Black scholars and organizers that outlines key issues affecting the community.
The State of the People POWER Tour is set to continue until June 15, 2024, concluding with a national event on Juneteenth. The coalition has already visited various cities across the nation, including Durham, North Carolina, and Newark, New Jersey, with Jackson, Mississippi, being the next scheduled stop. The tour aims to emphasize community involvement and highlight the work of local grassroots organizations that are actively engaged in addressing the challenges faced by Black communities.
Through its multifaceted approach, the State of the People POWER Tour seeks not only to provide immediate resources but also to foster long-term community resilience and activism in the face of ongoing political and economic transformation.
