A moment from the ordination ceremony of two new priests in Detroit.
On June 7, Detroit’s religious community gathered to celebrate the ordination of Fr. Pat Bruen and Fr. Benjamin Schroder as priests at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The ceremony, led by Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger, highlighted vows of celibacy and obedience. Both priests aim to serve their communities after deep personal journeys of faith and dedication.
Detroit witnessed a significant event in its religious community on June 7, when Fr. Pat Bruen, age 67, and Fr. Benjamin Schroder, age 26, were ordained as priests in a ceremony conducted by Detroit Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This moment marks the culmination of years of prayer, discernment, study, and formation for both men, who are eager to begin their ministry and serve their community.
Archbishop Weisenburger expressed his joy for the entire archdiocese during the ordination. He emphasized the significance of the two lifelong vows made by the candidates: celibacy and obedience. In addressing the nature of celibacy, the archbishop conveyed that it is not a form of solitude, but rather a means to deepen connections with others. He underscored the necessity of building deep and meaningful relationships, which are essential for a successful ministry.
Additionally, the archbishop discussed the concept of obedience in the context of contemporary societal values that often prioritize personal freedoms. He encouraged the new priests to cultivate and express profound relationships with their brother priests, reinforcing the support system within the clergy.
The ceremony featured the traditional laying of hands and prayer from the archbishop and numerous gathered priests. Fr. Bruen was vested by Fr. Robert McCabe, while Fr. Schroder was vested by Frs. Paul Snyder and Joseph Kirkconnell. Following this, the archbishop anointed the hands of both newly ordained priests, which symbolizes their mission to serve the community.
The assembly participated in the singing of the “Litany of Supplication” and “Veni Sancte Spiritus,” an integral part of the ordination ritual. After the official ordination, members of the congregation presented gifts of bread and wine for Mass, incorporating the community’s engagement into the sacred event.
Both Fr. Bruen and Fr. Schroder expressed a deep desire to serve the community and align their lives with God’s plan. Fr. Bruen, who has a unique background that includes a 40-year marriage before becoming a deacon following his wife’s passing, expressed gratitude to various supporters including family, teachers, and mentors. On the other hand, Fr. Schroder discovered his calling to the priesthood after high school and further pursued this path during his college years.
In the wake of their ordination, both priests plan to celebrate Masses of thanksgiving at their respective home parishes, allowing them to connect with their local communities and share their joy in this new phase of their lives.
The ordination of Fr. Pat Bruen and Fr. Benjamin Schroder is not just a personal milestone for the two men, but also represents an important moment for the entire archdiocese of Detroit. Their commitment to serve through celibacy and obedience, along with their dedication to building relationships within the community, promises a meaningful contribution to the spiritual landscape of Detroit. As they step into their roles as priests, they carry the hopes and prayers of many, ready to guide their communities in faith and service.
