Detroit, October 6, 2025

News Summary

Starting October 7, residents in Detroit will be required to use mandatory 10-digit dialing for local calls due to the exhaustion of available numbers under the 313 area code. A new area code, 679, will be introduced beginning November 7 for new customers in Detroit and its suburbs. A six-month grace period starting April 2025 will allow residents to transition to the new dialing method. The implementation of 679 is expected to offer sufficient numbers for the region for about 46 years, without affecting current 313 numbers or increasing rates.

Detroit residents will be required to implement mandatory 10-digit dialing for local phone calls starting October 7, 2025. This change comes as a result of the near-exhaustion of available phone numbers under the 313 area code. To accommodate the growing demand for phone numbers in the region, a new 679 area code will be introduced for new customers beginning November 7, 2025, once all available 313 numbers have been assigned.

The 679 area code will serve not only the city of Detroit but also surrounding suburbs, including Allen Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Redford Township, River Rouge, and Taylor. Residents who currently hold 313 numbers will not be required to change their existing numbers, and there will be no increase in rates as a result of the new area code.

The transition period has been planned by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), which announced in March 2025 that there will be a six-month grace period to help residents adapt to the new dialing method. This permissive dialing period will start on April 7, 2025, allowing residents to use either the 7 or 10 digits for local calls. However, after October 7, 2025, calls made using only 7 digits will no longer go through.

This introduction of the 679 area code marks the third addition to the 313 region, following the implementation of the 810 and 734 codes in 1993 and 1997, respectively. Proposals for adding an additional area code were first initiated by the MPSC in 2001, but the implementation was delayed for many years. As the 313 area code has been in place since 1947, it is deeply embedded in Detroit’s culture. The 313 Day is celebrated annually on March 13, highlighting the significance of the area code to the city’s identity.

With projections from the North American Numbering Plan Administrator estimating that 313 numbers will run out by the fourth quarter of 2027, the introduction of the 679 area code is expected to provide sufficient numbers for the region for approximately the next 46 years. Residents are encouraged to update their contact lists, speed dial settings, and any automated calling or dialing systems to ensure that they comply with the new 10-digit dialing requirement.

It is important to note that essential emergency services, including those that utilize the three-digit numbers 911 and 211, will remain unchanged and can still be accessed using only those digits. This aspect of dialing will ensure that crucial services continue to be easily reachable for the residents of Detroit and surrounding areas.
