Among the notable closures is Hooters, the last remaining location in Metro Detroit, which ceased operations in June as the chain transitions to a franchise-only model amidst its ongoing bankruptcy. In the District Detroit area, Good Cakes and Bakes has closed its doors after a two-year run, opting to focus efforts on its original location on Bagley Street.

The impacts of the closure wave extend to long-standing establishments, with Moro’s Dining in Allen Park closing after 45 years of service, as owner Thomas Moro prepares for retirement. Another legacy restaurant, Firenze Restaurant & Pizzeria in Warren, suddenly closed after over six decades following a disappointing remodel that drove away loyal customers.

Additional losses include Ferlito’s in Grosse Pointe Woods, which ceased operations due to the rising maintenance costs associated with its aging building, and Willie’s Donuts in Macomb, which has closed, although Golden Donuts is set to take over the space with a third location. BD’s Mongolian Grill in Dearborn also closed its doors after over 25 years in the community, while Capri Pizza in Southfield ended its long service after 60 years.

Super Baked, a dessert shop in Southgate, announced its closure after three and a half years, while The Emory in Ferndale, a popular brunch spot, is another name added to the list of affected businesses. Various other establishments, such as Arctic Circle Brewing in Chesterfield, have succumbed to financial struggles, further exemplifying the difficulties faced by the sector.

Across the city, new challenges also emerged for once-promising concepts. Chicken Guy, a restaurant launched by celebrity chef Guy Fieri in Farmington Hills, closed after only a year of operation, reflecting the unpredictable nature of the current restaurant landscape. Noteworthy establishments like The Morrie and Smuggler’s Run have also closed amidst this wave.
