News Summary
Drivers in Metro Detroit are bracing for a wave of road construction as MDOT announces significant closures in multiple counties. Key projects include the eastbound and westbound Henry B Joy Boulevard at I-94 in Macomb County, and southbound I-75 construction in Oakland County. Expect detours and delays as the construction efforts, which include resurfacing and preventive treatments, require overnight lane closures. Motorists are encouraged to stay updated on traffic information to navigate the disruptions effectively.
Detroit – Drivers in Metro Detroit are poised to face renewed road construction closures starting Tuesday, as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced a series of significant projects across multiple counties, signaling the end of the holiday reprieve for motorists.
In Macomb County, both eastbound and westbound lanes of Henry B Joy Boulevard at Interstate 94 in Harrison Township will be closed for construction from 7 a.m. on Tuesday until 7 a.m. on Friday, September 12. This closure is part of repairs being made to the westbound I-94 bridge over Henry Joy Boulevard, which was damaged nearly one year ago by a high-load vehicle. Detours for eastbound traffic will direct drivers to M-3 (Gratiot Avenue), Market Street, North River Road, and Irwin Drive, while westbound traffic will be rerouted via Irwin Drive, North River Road, and M-3 (Gratiot Avenue).
Oakland County is also experiencing construction-related closures. Southbound I-75 Exit 91 to M-15 and the southbound M-15 entrance ramp are closed as part of a $160 million resurfacing project between M-15 and the Oakland/Genesee County line. The reopening of these sections is expected later this fall, with detours routing vehicles via southbound Exit 89 to Sashabaw Road, westbound Waldon Road to M-15.
In Wayne County, significant work is set to disrupt traffic over the upcoming weekends. The southbound I-75 will be closed from Clark Avenue to Schaefer Road due to multiple projects. This closure will span from 9 p.m. on Friday, September 5, until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 8, and again from 9 p.m. on Friday, September 12, to 5 a.m. on Monday, September 15. During this time, all on-ramps to southbound I-75 from Clark Avenue to Schaefer Road will also be closed. The construction includes the application of protective surfaces to four bridges and an epoxy overlay on the I-75 Rouge River Bridge. Detours for southbound I-75 will be routed via westbound I-96, westbound I-94, and southbound I-275. Additionally, M-85 (Fort Street) will serve as an alternate route for local traffic.
Starting Tuesday, MDOT will also implement preventive crack seal treatments on approximately 168 lane miles in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties. This process is expected to conclude by late October and will affect various locations, including I-696 service drive, Interstate 94, M-102 (8 Mile Road), Old M-14 (Plymouth Road), M-153 (Ford Road), eastbound I-96/Schoolcraft Road, and US-24/Telegraph Road. Motorists should prepare for single- and double-lane closures during overnight hours, but I-94 will remain unaffected during these treatments.
With these extensive road work and closures, drivers are advised to keep up-to-date with traffic information through MDOT and navigation apps to plan accordingly for potential backups and delays.
The ongoing major highway projects in the region include a $160 million resurfacing effort on I-75 and a $140 million rebuilding initiative for the M-14/I-96 interchange in Wayne County. Additionally, a $260 million project on I-696 is set to continue until 2027. It is crucial to note that many of these projects are part of long-term planning that relies heavily on the availability of funding.
