Metro Detroit is bracing for a wild night as strong winds and thunderstorms make their way into the area! Meteorologists are predicting gusts reaching up to 60 MPH by midnight, creating concerns for safety and possible power outages. With a broken line of storms expected to roll through in just a couple of hours, now is the time to batten down the hatches!
DTE Energy is taking no chances when it comes to this weather event. They’ve readied thousands of line workers who are on standby to respond to outages. To bolster their efforts, an additional 650 workers are coming in from neighboring states to lend a helping hand. As of 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, DTE already reported over 1,151 outages, but estimates suggest that the number of affected customers might climb into the tens of thousands overnight. With the winds picking up, DTE’s team is preparing for a serious situation that may lead to widespread disruptions in power service.
And it’s not just the winds that are causing trouble! Parts of Metro Detroit have already seen up to 1.7 inches of rain throughout the day, while Allegan County has gotten an impressive 2.89 inches of rainfall. This wet weather is causing significant issues, with multiple roads in the Kalamazoo area closed due to flooding. A flood watch remains in effect for parts of southeast Michigan until 8 a.m. Thursday. People are being advised to avoid flood-prone areas and to drive carefully if they must venture out.
Unfortunately, the overwhelming amount of rainfall has also led to some environmental concerns. The flooding has resulted in combined sewage discharges into local waterways, including the Rouge River and the Trenton Channel of the Detroit River. Thankfully, Trisha Bruzek from the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s office has noted that facilities are managing the conditions as designed, indicating a functional response to the increased water levels. However, Macomb County has experienced a different situation, with a partially treated discharge recorded into Lake St. Clair from a treatment facility.
What a time to be living in this part of Michigan! Just days ago, many residents were grappling with the aftermath of a storm that left around 85,000 DTE customers in the dark. Remarkably, 97% of those affected had their power restored within 24 hours. But the troubles didn’t stop there. Across the state, Consumers Energy has reported 49,191 customers still without power due to the ongoing severe weather. And let’s not forget about northern Michigan, where many residents are still recovering from an ice storm earlier this week. DTE crews have stepped in to assist in that region too.
Looking ahead, the National Weather Service is noting a 30% chance of additional rain through Thursday. Given the current conditions, it’s a good reminder for everyone to stay informed and prepared.
