This year, Detroit Means Business is collaborating with various local organizations to host a range of engaging events between May 2 and May 10, aimed at promoting and celebrating small businesses in the city. These activities will include networking events, advocacy initiatives, mentorship opportunities, and resources focused on diversifying business leadership within the community.

As part of the National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is providing a slew of resources, including virtual summits and networking opportunities, which are designed to be non-discriminatory and accessible to all entrepreneurs. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will also provide insights into critical tax topics affecting small business owners during this week, underscoring the importance of financial literacy for entrepreneurs.

In line with these initiatives, registration for the Detroit Means Business Summit is now open, promoting discussions on the significance of small business growth within the community. This summit will serve as a platform for sharing innovative ideas and best practices among local business owners.

Highlighting the support for local initiatives, Jazzi Bee, founder of Story Community Garden, recently won $1,420 at the Detroit Soup competition held in April. This competition, which focuses on community-led projects, aims to assist local entrepreneurs in securing funding for their ventures. The Story Community Garden is set to serve as a hub for wellness initiatives and sustainability workshops starting in Summer 2025.

With a history of over 100 years, the Detroit Regional Chamber has long been a cornerstone of support for the local business community, facilitating access to valuable resources, funding opportunities, and events that foster networking and collaboration among entrepreneurs.

Despite facing challenges, including a decline in new business starts and an increase in downsizing in 2024, the Michigan entrepreneurial landscape continues to show signs of resilience. Women’s participation in business is also on the rise, with the percentage of women-owned businesses increasing from 29.6% to 35.5% over the last two decades—a positive trend that reflects a growing commitment to inclusion and diversity in entrepreneurship.

To support these efforts, various organizations such as The Build Institute, Motor City Match, and Hatch Detroit are actively working to provide funding and resources for small businesses. Additionally, multiple grant opportunities are available to help entrepreneurs secure the financial support they need, including the Pitch Perfect Grant, Famous Amos Ingredients for Success Entrepreneurs Initiative, and the Enthuse Foundation’s Paying It Forward Grant Program.

As the city engages in celebrations during National Small Business Week, numerous community support activities are planned, including food markets and pop-up shops designed to benefit local businesses.
