Detroit will welcome the second annual Story Fest at the historic Detroit Opera House, featuring prominent journalists and storytellers from the region. The event will present diverse narratives that reflect the community’s rich experiences, with discussions on important topics like environmental issues and local culture. Tickets are available starting at $15, and the festival promises to engage and inspire attendees with its compelling storytelling.

Detroit will host the second annual Story Fest on October 9, welcoming Michigan’s most prominent journalists and storytellers to share compelling narratives from the region. Scheduled to commence at 8 p.m. at the historic Detroit Opera House, Story Fest aims to engage audiences through true stories that reflect the diverse experiences and challenges within the community.

Produced by Back Pocket Presents, the event will showcase talented storytellers from various local organizations, including the Detroit Free Press, Michigan Public, Outlier Media, WDET-FM, and BridgeDetroit. Tickets are currently available for purchase, with prices starting at $15. Early bird access to tickets can be found at the official event webpage. Last year’s Story Fest was a resounding success, having sold out at the Detroit Film Theatre located within the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Among the memorable stories presented in the 2022 festival were powerful accounts that spanned various topics. Noteworthy narratives included a first-person account from a woman battling addiction, who dedicated her efforts to supporting others through harm reduction initiatives. Another captivating story focused on the iconic Detroit pizza, highlighting its rich culinary history. Additionally, an investigative piece shed light on the operational challenges within the Detroit Fire Department, stemming from a year-long exploration by a local journalist. Similarly, another storyteller provided insight into the significance of hip hop culture in Detroit.

This year’s festival will also feature Kelly House, a senior environment reporter from Bridge Michigan. House will present her research on the declining whitefish population in the Great Lakes, a pressing issue caused by invasive species such as quagga mussels that have been affecting the aquatic ecosystem since their introduction in the 1980s. These invasives disrupt the food web and threaten the survival of native species, making this discussion particularly timely and relevant.

The Detroit Story Fest is sponsored by the Knight Foundation and the Detroit Opera. In addition to these established sponsors, Back Pocket Presents is currently exploring further sponsorship opportunities to enhance the festival experience and support the storytellers’ initiatives.

For those interested in attending, the Detroit Opera House is located at 1526 Broadway Street, Detroit. The event is expected to draw a wide audience, eager to witness firsthand the unique stories that represent the fabric of the Michigan community. With a mix of humor, tragedy, and inspiration, Story Fest continues to establish itself as a vital event for those who appreciate the art of storytelling.

As the date approaches, event organizers encourage the community to join them in celebrating the power of stories. Tickets are already being sold, and with the previous year’s event experience in mind, attendance is likely to be robust as the festival returns to bring together the voices of Michigan in an engaging and innovative format.
