News Summary

On July 1, 2025, two separate drowning tragedies occurred in Oakland County, resulting in two fatalities and heightened concerns about water safety. A 74-year-old woman was found unconscious in Cass Lake, and a 61-year-old man drowned in Maceday Lake. Local authorities are investigating the incidents and urging residents to prioritize safety while engaging in recreational activities on the water.

Oakland County, Michigan – Two separate drowning incidents on July 1, 2025, have led to two fatalities and raised significant concerns about water safety in local lakes. A 74-year-old woman from Detroit was discovered unconscious in Cass Lake at Dodge #4 State Park, while a 61-year-old man was found dead in Maceday Lake. Together, these tragic events highlight the ongoing issue of drownings in the area, with authorities urging the community to prioritize water safety.

The first incident occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m., when witnesses reported that the woman had been swimming in about four feet of water, potentially snorkeling just before she was found floating face down. Bystanders quickly noticed her unresponsiveness and the absence of snorkeling equipment. They promptly rescued her from the water and emergency responders from the Waterford Township Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter. Despite their efforts, including performing CPR, she was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead two days later, on July 3. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

In a separate incident later on the same day, Joselito Estonilo Garcia, a 61-year-old man, was found unresponsive under a dock in Maceday Lake. Authorities received a 911 call around 9:42 p.m., reporting someone yelling for help. When responders arrived, they located Garcia, who is believed to have drowned. This marks him as the 13th drowning victim in Oakland County lakes this year. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of Garcia’s death, with investigators focusing on potential alcohol consumption as a contributing factor.

The recovery efforts for Garcia’s incident involved multiple responders, including members of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the Southeast Michigan Dive Group, the Livingston County Dive Team, and the Huron Clinton Metro Parks Search and Rescue Team. The sheriff’s office is actively working on the ongoing investigation, particularly examining how Garcia entered the lake prior to the distress call.

These recent incidents come amidst a troubling trend of drownings in the Oakland County area. As fatalities increase, County officials are emphasizing the importance of water safety among local residents. Events like these serve as stark reminders of the potential dangers associated with recreational activities in lakes.

The identification of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of both the elderly woman and Garcia highlights the urgent need for community awareness and preventive measures regarding water safety. Local authorities are encouraging swimmers and lakegoers to adhere to safety guidelines, such as swimming in designated areas, wearing appropriate flotation devices, and maintaining constant supervision of children while near water.

The community stands at a critical junction where preventive action is required to mitigate further tragedies. The ongoing investigations into these two drowning incidents may provide additional insight into how to enhance safety and awareness in the region’s lakes.
