Detroit hosted a transformative event on August 9th, as the Marshalls Good Stuff Social Club conducted a focused gathering aimed at empowering Black women through financial literacy and creative expression. The event took place at BasBlue and emphasized themes of purpose, passion, and prioritizing the unique experiences of Black women.
Curated by Amber Lewis, founder of Social N The City, the agenda featured multiple sessions designed to enhance various aspects of life, including mental, physical, financial, and creative wellness. Attendees engaged with expert speakers and participated in interactive workshops that underscored community connection and personal growth.
The day began with a financial recovery session led by Vivian Tu, a recognized financial educator and content creator known as Your Rich BFF. Tu introduced participants to two strategic methods for debt repayment: the snowball method and the avalanche method. The snowball method encourages individuals to pay off smaller debts first to build confidence and momentum, while the avalanche method advocates for tackling high-interest debts in order to save money over time. Tu underscored the significance of a tailored approach to personal finance, allowing those present to consider their unique circumstances.
Following this, the event featured a panel entitled “Building a Business from Your Art,” showcasing the experiences of artist Destinee Rose along with entrepreneurs Bo Shepherd and Rachelle Baker. Participants reported feeling inspired by Rose’s message of honoring one’s identity as a cornerstone of creative entrepreneurship.
The Speed Networking session, facilitated by Liza Gordon, invited attendees to engage with one another through lively prompts and was enhanced by music from DJ Rimarkable. Many participants described the atmosphere as dynamic, enjoyable, and informal, proving to be a great opportunity for forging new connections.
Later in the day, creative coaches Lauren Hom and Rachael Renae led the “A Portrait of Confidence” workshop. This session encouraged attendees to create self-portraits utilizing various materials, enabling them to express their personal self-image and emotions. The workshop also offered personalized color analysis sessions and featured seasonal dishes prepared by a women-led culinary team, rounding out a day filled with engagement and self-discovery.
As an added bonus, each participant received gift bags containing treats from Marshalls, contributing to the event’s overall positive and supportive atmosphere. The gathering was characterized as a “love letter to self-worth,” and received commendation from attendees who felt uplifted by the series of workshops and activities tailored specifically for their needs.
In line with its mission to empower women through a sense of community and financial independence, Marshalls announced plans to expand the Good Stuff Social Club initiative to three new locations, including Houston, Texas. The first of these new events is scheduled for April 5th and will feature speakers such as Vivian Tu and Keltie Knight among others. Additionally, intimate events will also be held later this year in Detroit and Phoenix, with a commitment to fostering growth and empowerment among participants.
To extend the benefits of the event beyond the gathering, Marshalls will also provide additional online resources and content through the Tools & Resources Hub, further supporting women as they embrace their self-worth and navigate their financial journeys.
