Detroit – First Merchants Bank has officially opened a new banking center in the Fitzgerald neighborhood, aiming to enhance banking access for the local community. This initiative is focused on supporting Black economic stability and creating opportunities for financial inclusion amidst challenges such as divestment and systemic barriers in the area.
The Fitzgerald Banking Center, located at 7525 West McNichols Road, is a 3,000-square-foot facility that emphasizes community partnerships and insights. It serves not only the Fitzgerald neighborhood but also nearby communities, including Bagley, University District, Marygrove, and Martin Park. The site was strategically chosen after extensive assessments and collaboration with local organizations, residents, and businesses, highlighting community engagement as a key principle in site selection.
The bank has invested $3 million in the development of the new center, which is part of a larger framework aimed at addressing the financial needs and challenges faced within these communities. The facility encompasses more than 15,000 square feet and features various banking services, including a drive-up service lane, an automated teller machine (ATM), a night drop, and landscaped parking.
Within the banking center, a dedicated financial wellness team and community lending advisors are available on-site to improve access to essential banking services. The branch manager, known for her commitment to understanding community needs, works to foster direct communication with local residents and ensure that services are tailored to address those needs effectively.
Local leadership is also engaged in overseeing the bank’s community initiatives. A community advisory board comprising local leaders has been established to ensure the alignment of the bank’s services with the demands of the neighborhood, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in the bank’s operations.
The Fitzgerald Banking Center’s location near the Livernois-McNichols corridor is significant, as it has historically served Detroit’s Black middle class. This site is viewed as a restoration of financial services rather than merely an upgrade, aiming to correct historical oversights that have often overlooked long-term residents in favor of newer developments.
The bank’s commitment to the community includes an investment strategy that allocates over $24.8 million for community development loans, $205,000 for down payment assistance, and $361,000 in community contributions in the upcoming year. In addition to financial support, First Merchants Bank has logged more than 1,100 volunteer hours and participated in over 30 local initiatives, underlining their dedication to community engagement.
Supporting sustainable growth, housing purchases, business funding, and credit repair is at the core of the banking center’s mission. The bank is focused on narrowing the wealth gap within the community while providing ongoing support and resources to local residents. Through a transparent approach to building trust and accountability, the bank aims to maintain strong relationships with those it serves.
Deputy Mayor Melia Howard emphasized the expectations surrounding the bank’s commitment to inclusive growth, which reflects the broader goals of the city in promoting equitable development. Councilwoman Angela Calloway has voiced her support for ensuring that the banking institution’s services meet the long-term needs of local residents, further solidifying the collaborative effort between First Merchants Bank and the community.
In summary, the Fitzgerald Banking Center is positioned not just as a financial institution but as a vital tool for enhancing community mobility and fostering economic resilience in Detroit’s Fitzgerald neighborhood and surrounding areas.
