A view of Southeast Michigan where residents are taking precautions against the frost advisory.
Southeast Michigan is facing a Frost Advisory from midnight to 9 a.m. Friday, affecting several counties with temperatures expected to dip into the 30s. Residents are advised to protect unprotected vegetation to prevent damage. While Metro Detroit braces for a chilly morning, afternoon temperatures are set to warm up, reaching the mid-60s. The weekend forecast looks promising for Mother’s Day celebrations with rising temperatures and sunshine. Residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions and prepare for fluctuating weather conditions as temperatures may approach 80 degrees early next week.
Southeast Michigan is under a Frost Advisory from midnight until 9 a.m. Friday, affecting various counties as temperatures are predicted to drop into the lower to mid-30s. The advisory includes Genesee, Lapeer, Sanilac, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, and Lenawee counties, posing a risk to unprotected vegetation, particularly tender plants, which could sustain damage or even perish due to the cold.
Residents living within the advisory area are advised to take precautions by moving potted plants indoors or covering vulnerable outdoor vegetation with fabric arranged to keep it elevated above the plants. In contrast, Wayne and Monroe counties will not be included in the frost advisory, as temperatures there are expected to remain milder in the upper 30s to 40 degrees.
In addition to the Frost Advisory in Southeast Michigan, a Freeze Warning is in effect for parts of Mid-Michigan and Northern Michigan, particularly impacting cities such as Bay City, Midland, Mt. Pleasant, and Traverse City. With temperatures dipping close to freezing, this freeze warning signifies the potential for significant impacts on agriculture and outdoor activities.
The notable cold temperatures expected overnight on Friday morning will be significantly below the typical average low of 48 degrees for Metro Detroit. Thursday night will provide relatively calm weather conditions with mostly clear skies, accompanied by light north-northeast winds at 5 to 10 mph.
Friday morning’s cold temperatures will give way to a warmer day ahead. Although the morning will be chilly, afternoon highs are projected to reach the mid-60s in several cities including Belleville, Birmingham, Detroit, Lincoln Park, and Roseville. On the other hand, Port Huron and Lexington will see maximum temperatures remaining in the 50s. Attendees at the Detroit Tigers’ 6:40 p.m. game are recommended to bring jackets, as temperatures will begin to drop significantly in the evening.
Friday night will feature lows ranging from 40 to 45 degrees, with areas such as Manchester, Whitmore Lake, and Lapeer likely to experience temperatures closer to 40 degrees. In contrast, urban zones like Detroit and Highland Park may see lows around 45 degrees.
The weekend forecast indicates favorable weather conditions, ideal for celebrating Mother’s Day. Temperatures will be on the rise, reaching lower to mid-70s during the daytime. Overnight temperatures for the weekend are expected to remain mild, in the upper 40s and lower 50s. While a stray shower could potentially occur late Saturday, forecasts suggest ample sunshine for both Saturday and Sunday.
Looking ahead to early next week, temperatures in the Metro Detroit area may approach the 80-degree mark. This warming trend signifies a shift from the recent cold snap, suggesting a return to more seasonal temperatures and outdoor enjoyment opportunities.
