Detroit – Kendrick Lamar and SZA electrified the audience during their co-headlined concert at Ford Field, which was part of their “Grand National Tour.” The nearly three-hour performance featured a series of dynamic visuals and musical collaborations, captivating fans from start to finish. The show marked the 18th stop on the tour, which is set to conclude in Stockholm later this August.
The concert opened with some theatrics as Kendrick Lamar made an entrance from a Buick Grand National Experimental (GNX), immediately setting an energetic tone with his performance of “Wacced Out Murals.” Lamar then transitioned into songs from his upcoming 2024 album titled “GNX,” showcasing tracks like “Squabble Up” and “TV Off.” Following his set, SZA made her entrance atop a decorated Buick GNX, adorned with vines, leading into her own portion of the concert.
Throughout the performance, Lamar and SZA shared a unique diamond-shaped stage, which encircled the audience, allowing for an immersive experience. The stage also featured a massive screen that displayed clips of the artists in comedic segments, adding an entertaining layer to the concert atmosphere. Notably, while other tour stops included guest appearances from artists like Doja Cat and Lizzo, the Detroit event was solely opened by DJ Mustard.
As the concert progressed, both artists performed a total of 54 songs, highlighting their individual styles while also incorporating their collaborative tracks, such as “Doves in the Wind,” “All the Stars,” and “30 for 30.” The pacing of the show saw them alternate sets, each incorporating numerous costume changes that enriched the theatricality of the event. SZA, for instance, showcased dancers in praying mantis costumes, while Lamar’s set featured impressive pyrotechnics.
SZA also took the opportunity to promote her recent release, “SOS Deluxe: Lana,” along with selections from her critically acclaimed album “Ctrl.” Fans responded enthusiastically, especially during her performance of “BMF,” which references “the boy from South Detroit.” Despite the vibrant performances, the rapid changes between sets occasionally hindered emotional connectivity with the audience.
Lamar and SZA’s vocal performances were undeniably strong, with standout moments such as SZA’s powerful runs in “Good Days” and Lamar’s rapid delivery in “DNA.” The concert did well to balance high-energy tracks with slower melodies, maintaining an engaging atmosphere throughout the lengthy performance.
While the artists kept banter to a minimum, they acknowledged the lively energy of the Detroit crowd, with SZA affirming the audience’s reputation for excitement. As the concert reached its climax, both performers delivered high-energy renditions of “Luther” and “Gloria,” concluding the show on a powerful note. In the end, they expressed gratitude towards the Detroit audience before retreating backstage via the Buick Grand National.
The “Grand National Tour” highlights not only Kendrick Lamar’s and SZA’s individual artistic journeys but also their potential to redefine the co-headlining concert experience. This collaborative tour serves as a testament to their shared creative synergy and commitment to delivering exhilarating performances.
