Ticket sales have begun, and the event is expected to attract significant attendance, impacting the local economy and highlighting Michigan’s growing status in professional golf.
Plymouth Township, Michigan – LIV Golf has officially announced that its 2025 season-ending team championship will take place from August 22 to August 24, 2025, at The Cardinal at Saint John’s, marking the tour’s inaugural event in Michigan since its launch in 2022.
The Cardinal is a newly renovated golf course set to debut in 2024. This will be the first new championship course opened in metro Detroit in over two decades. LIV Golf’s CEO noted that many players have significant ties to Michigan and are eager to compete at The Cardinal.
The tournament is expected to draw tens of thousands of spectators, establishing it as one of the most noteworthy professional golf events in Michigan since the 2008 PGA Championship. The tournament will feature 13 teams each consisting of four players, emphasizing both team competition and individual stroke play. A staggering $50 million purse will be available for competitors.
Ticket sales for the championship began last month, with three-day passes priced around $122. This event will be one of four professional golf tournaments hosted in Michigan in 2025, alongside the PGA Tour Rocket Mortgage Classic, the LPGA Meijer Classic, and the Dow Championship.
The selection of The Cardinal as the event’s venue was influenced by its high-quality facilities, including excellent practice areas and course conditions. It also features a luxury hotel and several venues designed to create a resort-like experience for participants and spectators.
In the context of LIV Golf’s broader ambitions, the organization has committed to expanding its global reach and has scheduled tournaments in six countries for 2025. The Cardinal’s association with LIV Golf may present new marketing opportunities, potentially transforming the site into a prime destination for golf tourism in Michigan.
Additionally, LIV Golf’s format introduces some unique elements to the professional golf scene, including shotgun starts and a lively atmosphere enhanced by music and entertainment during tournaments. This approach aims to attract a diverse audience and engage fans more actively.
Past notable players who have competed in Michigan include renowned golfers such as Bryson DeChambeau, who won the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic, as well as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, and Joaquin Niemann, the latter being a runner-up in a playoff in 2021.
Although conversations about a potential merger with the PGA Tour have taken place, it has been stated that significant differences between the two tours make a traditional merger unlikely. LIV Golf has been heavily supported by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, which has allowed it to invest considerably in its growth and development within the golf industry.
The announcement of the LIV Golf championship at The Cardinal highlights the event’s potential impact on the local economy, drawing both participants and fans to the area and contributing to the ongoing evolution of Michigan as a notable locale for high-profile golf events.
With its strategic investments and an innovative approach to the sport, LIV Golf is poised to shape the future of professional golf while offering fans an engaging and immersive tournament experience.
