City of Detroit during Memorial Day weekend with crowds enjoying festivals and events.

News Summary

Detroit is set for a busy Memorial Day weekend with major events like the Movement Music Festival, Tigers games, and concerts by The Weeknd. City officials anticipate heavy traffic congestion but will have additional ramps open and promote public transport options. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead for parking and transportation, as local hotels are nearing full capacity. With a record number of travelers expected across the nation, Detroit’s festivities promise to boost the local economy.

Detroit is preparing for a bustling Memorial Day weekend, as city officials anticipate that several hundred thousand visitors will flock to the downtown area. Major events scheduled for the weekend include the Movement Music Festival, Detroit Tigers games against the Cleveland Guardians, concerts by The Weeknd at Ford Field, and the annual Crunk Fest at the Fox Theatre. These attractions are expected to contribute to heavy traffic congestion, particularly at critical areas such as the I-75 Grand River and I-375 Madison exits.

In light of anticipated road congestion, city officials have announced that the M-10 Larned ramp will be open during the holiday weekend. However, ongoing construction activities on Jefferson, Randolph, Monroe, and Broadway streets may further exacerbate traffic issues. Visitors should note that Monroe Street is currently closed to vehicular traffic, although businesses in the nearby Greektown area remain operational.

For those traveling to downtown Detroit, it is advised to download the Park Detroit app to locate parking options on the streets and within garages. In addition, the ParkWhiz app can help find parking garages near specific events. City officials advise that visitors should expect to park 5 to 10 minutes away from their desired venues due to the high volume of attendees.

The Ford Underground Parking Garage, located at 30 East Jefferson Avenue, will operate around the clock from Saturday to Monday, with a daily parking rate of $10. Visitors utilizing street parking should be mindful of regulations, ensuring not to block crosswalks or fire hydrants in order to avoid fines or towing. The city has also implemented measures to monitor parking lots for potential price gouging, encouraging visitors to ensure that parking facilities display a valid business license, posted rates, and employ a parking attendant with a badge from the Detroit Police Department.

As downtown events are expected to draw large crowds, law enforcement, including Detroit police and private security, will provide extensive coverage to maintain safety and security throughout the area. Additional traffic measures have been introduced, such as road closures made in preparation for the upcoming Detroit Grand Prix.

City officials are also promoting public transportation options to ease travel during the busy weekend. The People Mover and QLine services will be operating on extended hours to accommodate the influx of visitors.

Local hotels in Detroit are nearing full capacity, indicating a significant economic boost for the area during this holiday. In general, nearly 45.1 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more during the Memorial Day weekend—marking a record increase. Similarly, Michigan anticipates that approximately 1.3 million residents will embark on journeys of at least 50 miles from home over the weekend.

In terms of travel expenses, the average gas price in Michigan has dropped to $3.06 per gallon, which is lower than prices from both the previous month and the same time last year. To further facilitate smoother travel experiences for holiday drivers, the Michigan Department of Transportation will pause work and lift lane restrictions on 92 out of 158 ongoing road projects over the weekend, allowing for greater ease of movement for holiday travel.

As Detroit readies itself for the Memorial Day festivities, visitors are encouraged to plan ahead in regard to traffic, parking, and transportation options to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in the city.
