Closed restaurant with a sign in Metro Detroit

News Summary

The Metro Detroit restaurant scene is struggling with an alarming increase in closures, as beloved eateries shut down due to economic pressures. Factors such as rising costs, changing consumer preferences, and the ongoing impacts of the pandemic have contributed to the unfortunate trend. Notable closures include Good Cakes and Bakes, Moro’s Dining, and Ferlito’s, among others, leaving food lovers concerned about the future of dining in the region.

Detroit – The restaurant scene in Metro Detroit is experiencing an unprecedented wave of closures as economic challenges continue to strain the hospitality industry. Many beloved eateries, from family-run establishments to local chains, have shut their doors for various reasons, including rising operational costs, changes in consumer preferences, and the lingering effects of the pandemic. A roundup of recent closures paints a troubling picture for food lovers in the region.

Good Cakes and Bakes, a bakery that had operated in District Detroit for two years, has closed its location to refocus efforts on its original site in Bagley. Meanwhile, Moro’s Dining in Allen Park has ended its 45-year run, with owner Thomas Moro opting for retirement after decades of service. Ferlito’s in Grosse Pointe Woods served its last meal in late June due to the financial burden of maintenance costs associated with its aging building. The owner continues to run a nearby takeout and delivery pizza service.

In Macomb, Willie’s Donuts is no longer in business, but local competitor Golden Donuts plans to open a new outlet in the same spot. Additionally, Pinky’s Rooftop in Royal Oak has shut down, though the Pearl Room located beneath it remains operational. Super Baked, a dessert shop in Southgate, closed after a successful three-and-a-half-year run, while the last Hooters in Metro Detroit, located in Taylor, also closed its doors in June following the chain’s bankruptcy filing in April.

Historical landmarks are not safe either; Firenze Restaurant & Pizzeria in Warren, a community favorite for sixty years, shut down when remodeling led to discontent with its new menu. Bobcat Bonnie’s recently closed two of its locations in 2024 as part of a strategy to streamline operations. The shuttering of Pizza Cat Max’s Greektown dine-in facility in March added to the growing list of restaurant casualties, although its carryout operations remain unaffected.

BD’s Mongolian Grill in Dearborn has ceased operations after years of serving local diners, similarly impacted by the broader economic downturn affecting the restaurant landscape. Capri Pizza in Southfield terminated its service after more than sixty years, ushering in new ownership for the building. Additionally, Chicken Guy, a fast-casual concept from chef Guy Fieri, closed its sole Michigan location after just over a year in business. The Morrie in Royal Oak followed suit after eight years, as it prepares for a new restaurant project entitled Blind Owl.

In Wyandotte, Smugglers Run, a tiki bar and event venue, succumbed to the economic climate, leading to its closure. The Detroit Institute of Bagels closed once more, and the future of its location remains uncertain following a sale. Nathan’s Deli, which had been a staple in downtown Detroit for 26 years, closed its doors due to declines stemming from the pandemic.

Another significant closure was the Rattlesnake Club, a revered dining establishment in Detroit that ceased operations after 36 years due to shifts in dining habits and challenges from the pandemic’s aftermath. Scout Vester, a new bar in Ferndale, also closed shortly after its opening, citing low sales as the cause.

Forthcoming closures include Arctic Circle Brewing in Chesterfield Township, slated to shut down at the end of 2024 amid financial difficulties. Popular eateries like Boneyard BBQ and Franklin Grill have also announced their closures following long successful runs due to retirements. Le Detroit Macron, a bakery in Hamtramck, and Vegan Nova, a plant-based eatery in Pontiac, both closed after just a year in business, highlighting the volatility in the current restaurant environment.

Additionally, The Emory in Ferndale and House of Pure Vin in Detroit have also succumbed to economic strain. Pop’s Hani Shop in Royal Oak has closed, making way for a new fast-casual restaurant named Taco Bros. The dining landscape has seen numerous beloved establishments such as Oloman Cafe, Black Rock Bar & Grill, and Maru Sushi & Grill cease operations in recent months, revealing a widespread trend of closure throughout the Metro Detroit region.

The ongoing economic challenges facing the restaurant industry have left many local favorites struggling to survive, raising concerns over the future of Metro Detroit’s vibrant dining scene.
