Metro Detroit is set to offer a range of train-themed activities for families this summer, featuring scenic rides, interactive exhibits, and beloved characters. Notable attractions include the Huckleberry Railroad, Railfans Weekend, and the Day Out With Thomas event. Families can enjoy experiences at various locations such as Greenfield Village, Detroit Zoo, and local parks, alongside seasonal train rides across Michigan. METRO DETROIT – Families looking for exciting adventures this summer can look forward to a variety of train-focused activities throughout Metro Detroit. From rides with beloved characters to interactive exhibits, the region is set to host several family-friendly train experiences in 2025.
The Huckleberry Railroad will operate from Thursdays through Sundays, offering a scenic 40-minute journey around Mott Lake and Crossroads Village. This picturesque ride is perfect for families and rail enthusiasts alike. Additionally, the Railfans Weekend is scheduled for August 2nd and 3rd, providing access to train sheds, model trains, and a unique opportunity to participate in a Day Out With Thomas, which will occur from August 15th to 17th and again from August 22nd to 24th.
For those looking for a nostalgic experience, Greenfield Village offers a classic train ride along with the chance to observe the conductor’s seat within the Museum’s permanent train exhibit. Moreover, the Detroit Historical Museum features an engaging model train set that captures the imaginations of young visitors.
Starting in May and continuing through October, the Great Lakes Live Steamers will host free mini train rides at both Starr Jaycee Park in Royal Oak and Kiwanis Park in Southgate. Kiwanis Park also boasts a train-themed playground, making it a fun destination for families.
