The operation posed health risks due to hazardous chemicals found in the counterfeit products, highlighting the dangers of such schemes.

Port Huron, Michigan – Four men from Michigan have been charged in connection with a significant counterfeit fragrance operation that has been described as one of the largest such seizures in state history. The announcement came from Attorney General Dana Nessel on Thursday, revealing that the operation had sold over $1 million worth of counterfeit perfumes and colognes online.

Among those charged are Kyle McIntyre of Port Huron, and three others: Ahasan Khan, Bilal Ahmed, and Shuba Barua. This investigation was initiated in October 2023, following a report from Walmart’s Global Security regarding a suspicious third-party seller. McIntyre was subsequently identified as the individual behind this seller’s account.

In December 2023, law enforcement executed search warrants in Port Huron, where they discovered and seized over 300 boxes of counterfeit fragrances. McIntyre also operated an Amazon storefront named Glow Beauty, which received more than 100 complaints over a span of two years, detailing the sale of counterfeit products.

Further investigation led authorities to McIntyre’s wholesaler, Barua, a 29-year-old from Sterling Heights. Barua had in his possession an alarming total of over 100,000 boxes of counterfeit fragrances in his warehouse. The operation involved counterfeit items imitating popular brands such as Victoria’s Secret, Chanel, Abercrombie, and L’Oreal, raising concerns over the quality and safety of these products.

Khan and Ahmed were found to be connected to both McIntyre and Barua through their online selling activities, indicating a collaborative effort in the counterfeit operation. McIntyre faces serious legal consequences including charges for conducting a criminal enterprise, six counts of possession of counterfeit goods, and one count of using a computer to commit a crime. Meanwhile, Khan, Ahmed, and Barua will face similar charges related to conducting a criminal enterprise and multiple counts of possession of counterfeit goods.

The suspects are anticipated to be arraigned soon, as the investigation remains ongoing. Attorney General Nessel has stressed the potential dangers associated with counterfeit products, highlighting that such items can contain hazardous chemicals, including animal urine and heavy metals, posing risks to consumers’ health and safety.

As a precaution, consumers are advised to be vigilant when making online purchases, particularly by remaining wary of prices that seem unusually low. They are encouraged to report any suspicions of counterfeit goods to protect themselves and others from potential harm.

This development underscores the ongoing challenges posed by counterfeit operations in Michigan and the importance of consumer awareness in mitigating these risks.
