Detroit – A Michigan State Police (MSP) trooper was critically injured during an early morning shooting on May 5, 2025, while conducting an undercover investigation on the west side of Detroit. The incident took place around 4:40 a.m. at the intersection of Murray Hill Street and Trojan Avenue.

During the operation, a 23-year-old male suspect exited a Chevrolet Cobalt and opened fire on the MSP troopers. Authorities initially believed the suspect had emerged from a house but later confirmed that he had been inside the vehicle. The injured trooper sustained multiple injuries, being shot three times in the lower back, leg, and chest. Fortunately, the chest injury was mitigated by a ballistic vest the trooper was wearing.

The wounded trooper was immediately transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition. In response to the gunfire directed at him, another trooper returned fire, resulting in the suspect’s death at the scene.

The Homicide Task Force is overseeing the investigation into the shooting incident. Following the shooting, MSP officers remained on site until approximately 10:30 a.m., securing the area and blocking off access to both Trojan Avenue and Murray Hill Street. As part of the investigation, authorities towed the suspect’s vehicle from his residence and questioned local residents for additional information.

Local community members expressed surprise and concern regarding the incident. A friend of the deceased suspect conveyed confusion about how the situation escalated to gunfire, emphasizing the expectation that police should serve and protect the citizens. This incident marks a continuation of troubling trends regarding police-involved shootings in Michigan, as recent months have seen a rise in violent encounters involving law enforcement.

Prior incidents of police shootings in the state have included fatal encounters involving officers and suspects armed with knives, further stressing the issues surrounding gun violence in Michigan. The ongoing investigation is expected to provide additional details about the incident and the circumstances surrounding it.

Michigan State Police have not released further information about the injured trooper or the deceased suspect as the investigation is still in progress. Authorities have indicated that more information will be made available as it is developed, and the community remains on alert as they await updates.
