LANSING, MICHIGAN – The tourism industry in Michigan generated an impressive $54.8 billion in economic impact in 2024, according to a new study released by Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). The analysis, conducted by Tourism Economics, highlights the state’s robust tourism sector as a critical contributor to its economic vitality.
In 2024, Michigan welcomed 131.2 million visitors, which accounted for a significant rise in visitor spending across the state, reaching a total of $30.7 billion. This figure marks a growth of 4.9% compared to the $29.3 billion spent by visitors in 2023. The influx of tourists resulted in $3.6 billion contributed to state and local tax revenue, illustrating the financial benefits tourism brings to Michigan’s economy.
The tourism sector also played a pivotal role in employment, supporting a total of 351,292 jobs throughout the state. This means that approximately one in every 17 jobs in Michigan is linked to the tourism industry, with around 96,000 jobs specifically in the food and beverage sector, further indicating the sector’s importance to local communities.
The report underlines the effectiveness of the Pure Michigan advertising campaign, which influenced over 789,000 leisure trips in 2024. The visits driven by this campaign led to an additional $1.3 billion in spending, resulting in a generation of $79 million in state tax revenue. Travelers aware of the campaign not only spent more, but they also tended to stay longer, engage in diverse activities, and explore a wider range of destinations than those who were not exposed to the campaign.
